Characters-“The Greasers” The Curtis Family-3 brothers that live together/their parents are dead Ponyboy-the youngest brother (14 years old)/goes to high school/has light brown hair and greenish-gray eyes/he is the narrator of the story Sodapop-the middle brother (16 years old)/works at a gas station Darry-the oldest brother (20 years old) has guardianship of Ponyboy since their parents died/works as a roofer The other “Greasers”-boys from the neighborhood Johnny Cade-Ponyboy’s best friend (16 years ld)/smallest in the group/has a horrible home life Dallas Winston-the toughest of the group/very rude at times, especially to girls/has been in jail Two-Bit Mathews-makes lots of jokes/the oldest of the group (18 years old) Steve Randall-Sodapop’s best friend (17 years old)

Characters- “The Socs” The Socs or “Socials” are the rich kids in town and they like to fight and pick on the “Greasers” Cherry Valance-a girl that Ponyboy meets at the movies/she is the girlfriend of Bob Bob-the leader of the “Socs”/not a very nice guy/picks on Ponyboy and Johnny Randy-Bob’s best friend

setting Most of the story takes place in the town where Ponyboy lives His house Movies playground There is one part that takes place in an abandoned church where Ponyboy and Johnny hide out.

Chapters 1-3 Ponyboy tells us a little about where he lives and his life. While Ponyboy is coming back from the movies some Socs attack him and try to cut his hair. They punch him but Darry and the rest of the Greasers rescue him. Johnny and Ponyboy go to the movies with Dally. Ponyboy and Johnny meet Cherry Valance and her friend, Marsha. We learn that Johnny had been beat up pretty badly by some Socs a few months ago. Johnny, Ponyboy and Two-Bit walk Marcia and Cherry home but their boyfriends see them and threaten the Greasers. Cherry and Marcia leave with their boyfriends because they don’t want any trouble. Ponyboy and Johnny fall asleep in the park. When Ponyboy gets home he and Darry get in a fight and he decides to run away with Johnny.

Chapters 4-6 Bob and some other Socs find Ponyboy and Johnny at the park and try to drown Ponyboy. He passes out. Johnny takes a knife and stabs Bob, killing him. Ponyboy and Johnny realize that they are in big trouble and run away. They find Dally and ask him for help. He tells them to take a train to Windrixville and hide out at the old abandoned church. Johnny and Ponyboy cut their hair and Ponyboy bleached his. Dally shows up at the church and brings a letter from Sodapop. Dally tells them that the Socs and the Greasers are going to have a fight and that Cherry is acting as a “spy” letting the Greasers know what the Socs are up to. Johnny decides to go back and turn himself in. The return to the church and see that it is on fire. There are children trapped in the church (they were there for a school picnic). Ponyboy and Johnny go into the church to save the kids. We learn that Johnny broke his back and is burned pretty badly.

Chapters 7-9 Dally has a burned arm but will be okay. Johnny will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, if he lives. There is a chance that Sodapop and Ponyboy will have to go to a boys’ home. Sandy, Sodapop’s girlfriend, left for Florida. Randy, Bob’s best friend, talks to Ponyboy. Two-Bit and Ponyboy go to visit Johnny and Dally. Johnny’s mom tries to visit him but he doesn’t want to see her. The boys prepare for the rumble. The Greasers won the rumble. Ponyboy and Dally go to visit Johnny. Johnny dies and Dally runs offs

Chapters 10-12 Ponyboy tells the rest of the group that Johnny dies and Dally ran off. Dally calls and tells Darry that he just robbed a grocery store. The cops are after him. The gang goes to meet Dally so they can hide him. Dally is shot and killed by the cops. We learn that Ponyboy has been asleep for a few days recovering from the rumble and stress. Randy comes to visit Ponyboy. They both have to go to court soon about the incident in the park. Ponyboy, Cherry and Randy go to court. The judge knows that Ponyboy did not kill Bob and they let him stay with Darry and Sodapop. The Curtis boys try not to fight so much anymore and life goes on.
