What is Physical Medicine No it isn’t a physical therapist. It is the use of physical agents in the care of patients, such as: ultrasound mechanical assist devices electrical stimulation manual medicine therapeutic exercise
What is Rehabilitation? The development or restoration of a person to their fullest physical, psychological, social, vocational and educational potential consistent with his or her physiological or anatomic impairment and environmental limitations. In other words….. “putting the pieces back together “ !!
How did PM&R originate? The roots of PM&R date back to the use of physical agents such as the sun’s heat and hot springs for medicinal purposes in early recorded history. The field began in earnest in the 1930s.
More on the origin……. After WW II, as thousands of veterans came home with serious disabilities, the task of helping to restore them to productive lives became a new focus for the field. The Advisory Board of Medical Specialties granted PM&R its approval as a specialty of medicine in 1947.
What is the goal of PM&R? Work to obtain OPTIMAL FUNCTION and improved QUALITY OF LIFE !!! Emphasizes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders involving the neuromusculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems

Types of Practice Inpatient Free Standing Rehabilitation Hospital Transitional Care Units Acute Care Rehab - usually a rehab floor within a large med center
What is the role of the PM&R physician ? Work as the leader of an interdisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive rehabilitation program for the patient Provide expert opinion and services for referring physicians Optimize the outcomes of surgical interventions through rehabilitation efforts
Interdisciplinary Team neuropsychologists physical therapists occupational therapists speech and language pathologists social workers nurses dietitians recreational therapists Orthotics/prosthetics specialist
What is the future of PM&R? As the population ages, as people survive conditions that once would have been fatal, and as quality of life is an increasing concern, the field of PM&R is moving to the forefront of medicine PM&R workforce study
