THE ANCIENT TIME…… Shanghai, abbreviation " 沪 ", the nickname " 申 ". At about six thousand years ago, now of the west of Shanghai has already took shape into land, the eastern region also took shape into land about 2,000 years ago. According to Spring- Autumn Period and warring states period, Shanghai was once belonged to " 春申君 “ , a monarch of one of the ancient split countries, so Shanghai also called " 申 ". The fourth and fifth centuries of UN dynasty, Songjiang (renamed the Suzhou river) and coastal area of residents living in fishing, they created a kind of weaving fishing tool called " 扈 ", but also because it was up RuHaiChu says " 渎 ", accordingly, Songjiang downstream area called " 扈渎 ", after again change " 扈 " as " 沪 ". The Formation of a city A.D. 751 years, Shanghai region belonged to Songjiang county and ranged north to today's Hongkou area, south to the sea to the east, Xiasha. A.D. 991 years, because of coastline constantly moved to east, it was so inconvenient for foreign ships to pass so that they stayed in one of the tributaries of Songjiang River,called " 上海浦 ” 。 In the Southern Song dynasty (AD 1,267) in Shanghai puxi, the "Shanghai Town" was set up. A.D years, the central government of the Yuan dynasty approved that Shanghai county was stablishmented, marking the beginning of a city,Shanghai. BACK→

The Develope of Shanghai During the Yuan Dynasty ( ), Shanghai Town had greatly developed and the city set up a shipping administration. After a while, the town was promoted to a county, which consisted of today’s urban areas, and three other counties of Shanghai ; Qingpi, Nanhui, and Chuansha. During the Ming Dynasty ( ), Shanghai was to become China ’s largest textile center. Shanghai ’s business was sharply on the rise! At the 24th year of the Qing Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1685), the Qing Government set up a Customs Department in Shanghai. After that, during the reigns of Qing Emperor Qianlong and Qing Emperor Jiaqing, Shanghai gradually became China ’s major trading port and water transportation center for gains. BACK → BACK

Dark ages and dawn In 1843, after the Opium War, Shanghai was forced to become an open port by its colonialists. In 1845, Britain first set up its concession in Shanghai. In 1848, the United State set up its concession, followed by France in In 1863, the British and American concessions amalgamated into the International Settlement. Shanghai was actually partitioned into a Chinese Section, the International Settlement and the French Concession. In the following 100 years after 1843, Shanghai had become an important port for foreign colonialists to dump their goods, raw materials and money. Shanghai became the strongholds of imperialism invasion in China political, economic and cultural. May 27,1949, Shanghai,the city which has glorious revolutionary tradition is liberated and begin newborn. BACK→
