What is a CONSTITUTION? A constitution is a set of rules which explain how the government of a country works.

Why did the US need a Constitution? Between 1776 and 1783, the Americans fought the British to get their independence. In 1783, the British left. America had no government. Every country needs a government. How were the Americans going to form a government?

THE US CONSTITUTION The US has a written constitution. It was signed in It describes the government of the US and what that government is allowed to do.

ARTICLE 1 Describes how laws are made in the USA. It describes the work and membership of the House of Representatives and the Senate. It also describes what the government of the USA is entitled to make laws about.

ARTICLE 2 Describes the power of the President, who is entitled to hold the office of President and how long they are entitled to hold that office.

AMENDMENTS In addition to the original Constitution there are 27 Amendments. The first ten Amendments are known as the BILL OF RIGHTS because they protect the rights of citizens of the US from the power of the government.

AMENDMENTS continued Amendment 1 – guarantees freedom of speech and religion. Amendment 2 – gives Americans the right to carry guns. Amendment 5 – allows Americans the right to silence if they think their answers might incriminate them. Amendment 6 – allows citizens the right to a trial by jury.
