Mass Media Newspapers

What is a newspaper? It is a paper printed and sold daily or weekly with news, advertisements, articles about political, crime, business, art, entertainment, sport events.

In ancient Rome, announcement bulletins of the Acta Diurna government were made public by Julius Caesar. They were carved on stone or metal and posted in public places. In China, early government-produced news sheets, during the late Han dynasty (second and third centuries AD). Between 713 and 734, the Chinese Tang Dynasty published government news; it was handwritten on silk and read by government officials.

Printing press was invented in the15th century in Germany The first Russian printed newspaper was introduced in 1702 by Peter I. It was "Vedomosti”

Russian newspapers Today Russia can be proud of the variety of newspapers. You can find newspapers of all kinds: national and local, official and private, quality and popular; newspapers for children, teenagers, people of different trends, for all kind of fans: sport-fans, car-fans, etc.

Popular (Tabloids) Local Quality (Broadsheets) Weekly National Daily Newspapers

Types of newspapers Usually newspapers are divided into two groups: quality and popular. Quality papers contain political, economic news, popular papers have short articles about celebrities, crime, large headlines and a lot of pictures. Though now it is almost impossible to classify all the Russian newspapers into these groups.

Local papers In our Republic we have some newspapers too. They usually write about local news. The papers also include weather reports and a TV guide.

The most popular newspaper in Cheboksary is “Pro gorod” because it is delivered free.

Some words about press on Britain The "quality" papers are for more serious readership. These papers are bigger in size, with larger articles and more detailed information. They are - "The Times", "Daily Telegraph", "The Guardian", "Financial Times", "The Independent". The popular papers are less in size, with many pictures, big headlines and short articles. They are easy to read. They are such papers as "Daily Express" "Daily mail", "Daily Mirror", "Daily Star", "The Sun" and others.

Where are the broadsheets and tabloids?

Teenage magazines A lot of young girls in Russia like to read magazines “Cool”, “Oops”, “Все звезды” because they have glossy colourful covers and include beauty and fashion, celebrity gossip, horoscopes, quizzes. Boys prefer reading music magazines and about sport, such as “Football”, “Fishing” and others.

Conclusion Though newspapers are not so popular nowadays as Internet or TV, there are a lot of people who prefer reading to watching. Thanks for attention!
