YPP Activities Strong interest in social activities Some of your suggestions –BBQ, something like Summie Cocktail –Getting to know area together, some forum for info exchange… Happy that some of you would like to help organizing them!

Integration into the Geneva/CERN Area Most of you are quite well aware of what’s going on in the area Maybe to be shared with newbies?

Future of HEP Larger interest in global information of HEP rather than specifics of the experiments you work in

Career/Work Issues of YPP Biggest concern –Availability of academic jobs –Industry jobs & career fair smaller importance Alumni Association not deemed so important

Mentoring/Networking etc Mentoring system not so important Advisor/Advisee Relation not a very big concern Networking (more so for post-docs) and role in big experiments deemed important Information on Award & Scholarship possibilities is a concern

Discussions/social issues Interest in Discussion Fora/Communication channels Help for moving onsite specially interesting to students Interest in social issues like childcare/healthcare minimal

YPP Priorities Post-doc YPPs most interested in activities regarding their own issues (most comments on YPP issues concerned JOB SECURITY), second comes the current and future state of HEP Student YPPs ~equally interested in YPP issues, social activities and academic training academic trainingoutreachsocial activitiescurrent & futureHEP stateYPP issues

Your biggest concerns A few selections (all of your comments were very interesting!): –Many are concerned with permanent positions, HEP career structure: difficulties to find fast permanent job with reasonable salary and conditions My mayor concern is how difficult it is for young people to get permanent positions. –Big concern about size and time-scale of experiments/collaborations Loosing interest. Projects become so vast open questions so remote that itis hard to keep interested - even for myself what about the general public? Due to the extreme size of ongoing experiments and activities small sometimes even more interesting projects can not any more be followed. On the long term this will have two major consequences: one loosing a lot of interesting figures the other becoming more and more anonymous. 1)Future experiments and long-term planning of the field 2)Postdoc positions 3)The kind of career High Energy Physicists are expected to follow4)Opportunities in the near future for tenure potions at university both in Europe and the US for HEPhysicists 5)Opportunity in the near future for non-academic research jobs 6) Opportunity in the near future for industry-related jobs –Funding of HEP, the future of the field, support from general public 1. the budget situation at CERN and at the institutes.2. the lack of perspective Getting out information about the importance of fundamental physics research in society to increase the interest among young students and among decision makers. A change in attitude will have positive repercussion on many other secondary worries. The ratio gain/prize seems to be low compared to other sciencies. That it gets too big and too political too many people making decisions and noone there to do the work Future funding support/endorsement from general public no more money :)difficult to write about it in a few words. everybody knows about increasing of lack money which can be IMHO cured only through more and propper propaganda - outreach Is there a future?

Survey Conclusions (preliminary) Most important categories are YPP issues and the HEP field state AT category –Possible interest in ypp for ypp seminars Outreach –Don’t repeat what CERN’s already doing, but increase awareness for outreach Social activities –Most of you interested, plan to propose some activities here (and accept your offer to help! ) HEP field –Discussion fora, propagate HEP decision infos YPP issues –Your biggest interest Maybe improve academic job info, discussion fora, seminars on job- related skills? Your input and suggested activities wanted!
