Homework  Write a rough draft of your narrative. Bring a hard copy of it to class on Monday/Tuesday. This is worth a summative grade!  Be sure to read the rubric to make sure you are including the necessary criteria in your narrative.

The Color of Water Reflection Questions Choose one of the following questions, copy it into your journal and answer it in writing. Share your answer with your table mates. Make sure each question is answered by at least one student at your table.  Why do you think it was important to James for his mother to accompany him to David Lee Preston’s wedding?  What are some of the book’s strengths? What are the weaknesses?  What impact has the book had on you? What have you learned about people? What have you learned about yourself? What do you see differently as a result of having read the book?  Explain James’ statement that “the image of her riding that bicycle typified her whole existence to me.” After reading the book, what image would typify James’ existence to you?  James’ mother’s first name began as Rúchel to Rachel to Ruth. Explain how the changing of her name was a vehicle for change in her life.

Class Discussion on the technique of Reflection Reflection: A technique in which the writer comes through to comment on what happened, often conveying insight into his/her thoughts. How does the author reflect on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative? Would James and his mother have attended the wedding if this book had not been written? How does the afterword show the author reflecting on the book? Be sure to record this info and corresponding page numbers in your journal.

Your Narrative  Spend some time writing your first draft.  Include:  A conflict  Dialogue  Sensory description  Pacing  Reflection
