Map Scales Geometry Unit 11, Day 4 Mr. Zampetti

Map Scales Maps use scales in order for the viewer to know the distance between different places or objects.

Verbal Scales Verbal scales use words to express the relationship between the map distance and actual distance Ex. One inch represents 10 miles.

Graphic Scale A graphic scale shows directly on the map the corresponding actual distance. This is also known as a bar scale. Ex.

Ratio Scale A ratio scale is a when a fraction is used as a representation of any unit on the map and one of the same unit in actual size. The fraction is usually written with a colon Ex. 1:24,000

As a class We are going to use the map to find the distance from Syracuse to Oneonta Remember you can only stay on roads!!

Adding together to distances Down ¼ in To the right 1 3 / 16 Down 7/16 In the calculator: (1/4) (3/16) + (7/16)

Total distance From Syracuse to Oneonta is 15 / 8 Using the scale, measure for 20 miles. 20 miles = 3/8 in

Set up a Proportion! 3/8 in = 15/8 in 20milesx miles Cross multiply! Syracuse to Oneonta is about 100 miles

Map Activity You will pick 2 cities in NY out of a cup. Those will be your start and finish points of your “trip”. Complete the activity as stated on the worksheet using the scale on the map. You must complete 2 “trips”

Homework Finish your “trips” if need be.
