Opportunities for Teaching: Library-Teaching Center Partnerships 5th “Reference in the 21st-Century” Symposium Columbia University Libraries March 9, 2007 Susan Fliss Dartmouth College Library

Library Liaison Transition from: “Let’s talk about how I can help you!” to: “Let’s talk about your teaching”

Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning Orientation and mentoring programs that support new faculty. Seminars, workshops and luncheons where Dartmouth’s conversation about teaching and learning thrives. A fully equipped teaching center where faculty can share ideas, try out new methods and technologies, and showcase their success.

Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning Individual consultation regarding curriculum development and teaching methodology. Seminars for graduate teaching assistants on effective teaching. Fellowships for faculty who have promising ideas for applying technology to their teaching.

DCAL Team

Power of Place The Center's priority is getting people around the table talking about teaching. "DCAL is another forum for faculty, librarians, and instructional technologists to collaborate with an intentional focus on teaching." Thomas Luxon, Director of DCAL

Opportunities for Librarians Hear faculty discuss challenges and goals of teaching Education literature in addition to library literature Develop role and identity as teachers Greater visibility for librarians Forum to bring info lit into a campus conversation on teaching and learning

Workshops showcase faculty-librarian collaboration The Blackboard Connection: Students and the Library Designing Research Assignments (Writing Program-DCAL) Graduate Student Teacher Training Plagiarism (Writing Program-DCAL) Teaching with Data Sets Teaching with Technology (Academic Computing-DCAL) Teaching Students Research

Faculty Feedback Seeing how willing librarians are to help with providing actual hands-on support to our classes. It is terrific to have this. I've already met with a librarian to talk about having her involved in my annotated bibliography assignment through Blackboard. Dialogue between faculty, librarians, computing staff Contact and discussion with librarians who are committed to teaching and to collaboration with faculty. The discussion of research "from the student's point of view."

Culture of Collaboration Retreat for teachers of first-year seminars Writing Program/DCAL/Library DCAL Fellowship (faculty) to revamp a course: course relief and team support librarian and instructional technologist Active Leaning Institute Academic Computing/DCAL

Outcomes Faculty-librarian collaboration in teaching Greater visibility for librarians Stronger support among librarians; successful peer coaching program Info lit in curriculum Understanding of challenges Common language of teaching
