Geometry - Conic Section Unit 4

Purpose Standards Learning Progression Lesson Agenda Getting Ready for the Lesson (Resources and Tips) Vocabulary Activities Lesson (Presentation) Textbook Connections Additional Resources Provided is a lesson for teachers to use to help students understand how to create an equation of a circle using the Pythagorean Theorem. Included are the following:

Common Core Standards Derive the equation of a circle of given center and radius using the Pythagorean Theorem; complete the square to find the center and radius of a circle given by an equation. (Create, 2) (Analyze, 2)

Math Practices MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Middle School Focus  Grade 6 O Reason about and solve one- variable equations and inequalities. O Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables.  Grade 7 O Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. O Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.  Grade 8 O Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem. Source: California Framework

High School Focus Algebra I  Creating Equations  Create equations that describe numbers or relationship. Geometry  Expressing Geometric Properties with Equations  Translate between the geometric description and the equation for a conic section.  Use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically. Algebra II  Creating Equations  Create equations that describe numbers or relationship. Source: California Framework

Deriving Success Planning for Instruction with Equations of a Circle

Getting Ready O Pre-assessment- used to determine understanding of prerequisite skills O Prerequisite skills include O 7.G.4 O Know the formulas for the area and circumference of a circle and use them to solve problems; give an informal derivation of the relationship between the circumference and area of a circle. O 8.G.6 – 8 O Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. O Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. O Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points in a coordinate system. O Algebra-A.CED.2 O Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales. O Geometry-G.C.2 O Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, and chords. Include the relationship between central, inscribed, and circumscribed angles; inscribed angles on a diameter are right angles; the radius of a circle is perpendicular to the tangent where the radius intersects the circle. 1

Misconceptions and Anticipated Issues Common Issues Suggested Strategies/Resources a. Incorrectly identifies the center of the circle b. Incorrectly identifies the equation of the circle c. Incorrectly uses the Pythagorean theorem to figure out the equation d. Places coordinates values incorrectly in the equation e. Errors when completing the square f. Not able to connect the process of completing the square and the equation of a circle a. Provide additional practice b. Additional practice with writing the equation of a circle. Have students match circles to equation that represents the circle using the related MARS task. c. Have students check their equation by graphing on coordinate grid or calculator. Review the Pythagorean theorem and have students review related videos from Khan academy. d. Have students create a circle that matches the equation. e. Provide additional practice f. Provide the video lesson
