The Digestive and Excretory Systems Chapter 4 Lesson 4 The Digestive and Excretory Systems
Digestion Is the process by which the body breaks down food into smaller components that can be absorbed by the bloodstream. ( Takes about 4 hours )
Digestive System Is a group of organs that work together to break down foods into substances that your cells can use.
Steps in Digestion 1. Mouth – crushing and Grinding 2. Stomach – gastric juices mix with food 3. Small Intestine – Useful material extracted 4. Colon – removal of wastes
How does digestion begin? Saliva- is a digestive juice produced by the salivary glands in your mouth.
Small Intestine A coiled tube, about 22 feet long where most of the digestive process takes place.
Liver The body’s largest gland, secretes a liquid called bile that helps to digest fats. The liver helps regulate the level of sugar in the blood and breaks down harmful substances such as alcohol. Bile is made in the liver
Pancreas Is a gland that helps the small intestine by producing pancreatic juice, a blend of enzymes that breaks down proteins, carbohydrates and fats.
Excretion Is the process by which the body gets rid of wastes.
Three main functions of the digestive system Digestion Absorption Elimination The pancreas, liver, and gall bladder help with the absorption of nutrients
Colon A storage tube for solid wastes.
