Lesson 8-3 Scientific Notation

Definition Scientific Notation - A number is expressed in scientific notation when it is written as a product of a factor and a power of 10. The factor must be greater than 1 and less than 10.

Scientific to Standard Notation 2.45 x 10 8 Move the decimal point to the right 3 x Move the decimal point to the left.

Express each number in standard form.

Standard to Scientific Notation 30,500,000 Move the decimal point to the left Move the decimal point to the right.

Express each number in scientific notation.

The graph shows chocolate and candy sales during a recent holiday season. Express the sales of candy canes, chocolates, and all candy in standard notation. Write each of these numbers in scientific notation. Candy TypeCandy Canes ChocolateAll Candy Total Sales$120 million$300 million$145 billion

The Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association reported that in 2000, women spent $4.4 billion on 124 million pairs of shoes. Men spent $8.3 billion on 169 million pairs of shoes. Express the numbers of pairs of shoes sold to women, pairs sold to men, and total spent by both men and women in standard notation. Write each of these numbers in scientific notation.

Multiplication with Scientific Notation Evaluate (5 x )(2.9 x 10 2 ). Express the result in scientific notation and standard form. = 14.5 x = (1.45 x 10 1 ) x = 1.45 x (10 1 x ) = 1.45 x or (5 x )(2.9 x 10 2 ). = (5 x2.9)(10 -8 x 10 2 ).

Multiplication with Scientific Notation Evaluate (7 x )(4.3 x ) Express the result in scientific notation and standard form.

Division with Scientific Notation Evaluate Express the result in scientific notation and standard form. = x 10 4 = (2.45 x ) x 10 4 = 2.45 x (10 -1 x 10 4 ) = 2.45 x 10 3 or 2450
