Lesson 8-3: Percents Greater than 100 or less than 1. Objective: We will learn to use percents that are less than 1%. We will also learn to use percents that are greater than 100%.

When a soccer coach tells you, “To win a game, you’ve got to give 110%.” What did the coach mean?  How do you know when a percent is greaterthan 100% or less than 1%?  In a fraction, when the numerator is bigger than thedenominator the percent is greater than 100%.  In a fraction, when the numerator is smaller than thedenominator the percent is between 1% and 100%.  When you are not sure, rewrite the fractions ordecimals as percents, if the percent is a decimal thepercent is less than 1%.

Examples:  Classify each fraction or decimal as: (A) Less than 1%, (B) greater than 100%, or (C) between 1% and 100%.  240 = = 100  = =  1 = = 4  Use, = to compare the numbers in each pair. 9% _______ ________ 130%  Write each fraction or decimal as a percent. 70 = _____________ = __________  Write the percent as a decimal.  2000% = ____________  8% = ______________
