08/05/02 1 Library Orientation Welcome to the Rainbow Middle School Library

08/05/02 2 Library Orientation Why Are We Here Today? To learn how to find a book on the shelves To learn how to check out a book To learn the rules when you are in the library

08/05/02 3 Library Orientation How Do I Find a Particular Book? Computers Search by Keyword, Title, Author, Subject, or A/R

Student computers to search for library books. You do not have to ask permission to look up books on these computers.

08/05/02 4 Library Orientation Now That You Know Which Book You Want…How Do You Find It? First you have to know that our library is divided into 4 classifications:  Reference  Nonfiction  Fiction  Biography

Reference Books Encyclopedias Dictionaries Almanacs Atlases Thesaurus Guinness Book of World Records

Reference Section – RMS Library

Non Fiction Books Arranged by the Dewey Decimal classification. The Dewey Decimal classification includes both numbers and letters on the spine of the book. The Dewey Decimal classification arranges books according to their subject.(Sports - 796, Poetry- 811, Geography 976). Remember….Nonfiction books are arranged in number order on the shelves!

Non Fiction Section – RMS Library

Fiction All of our fiction books are arranged in alphabetical order by the author’s last name. (Example – All of the Goosebump books are by the author R.L. Stine, all of these books will have Fic Sti on the spine of the book and are together on the shelves). The majority of our AR books are fiction books. The yellow dot on the spine indicates that the book is AR.

Fiction Section – RMS Library

Biographies Arranged in alphabetical order by the last name of whom the book is about. Can you tell me what the call number on a biography about George W. Bush would be? Bio Bus What is the call number on a biography about Helen Keller? Bio Kel

This is a sample of the biography section in our library.

08/05/02 5 Library Orientation What Do You Do When You Are Ready To Check Out? Check out counter and library number How long can you keep your book? Where do you put your book when you return it? What about fines and lost books?

08/05/02 6 Library Orientation What About the Other Computers? RULES! RULES! RULES! 1. Permission from the teacher. Do not ever sit down at a computer to take an AR test or do research without permission from Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Rich! 2. If you change any settings (screen savers, desktop, desktop colors) you will lose all computer privileges 3. Always talk to Mrs.Brown if you need to print something from the computers. All copies cost.$25. 4.These rules apply to all of the computers in the school!

Computers used for research, AR test, class projects! You must get permission from Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Rich to use these computers

This is where you put your books when they are returned.

This is what will be stamped to tell you when your book is due back in the library. Everyday that your book is overdue, you will be charged 5 cents per day, per book.

You will also get a write-up if you do the following: 1. Chewing Gum – Absolutely Not! 2. Bouncing on the sofa or chairs. If you do this you will not be allowed to sit on that furniture and you will get a write-up. 3. Pushing books through the shelves to the opposite side. 4. Running or playing anywhere in the library.

What about Accelerated Reader 1. Your reading teacher will tell you if you are required to get AR points. 2. Mrs. Brown will reward the top 10 AR students each 9 weeks. If your teacher does not require that you get points, see Mrs. Brown if you want to be in the school contest! The RMS AR test list can be found on the school website and also in the big white notebook in our school library. All books in the RMS library with yellow dots on the spine are test books. No dot..not a test book! All library books with dots at other libraries are not necessarily test books for RMS! Always check out our list if you are reading to take a test on the book!

We are so glad that you are a student at Rainbow Middle. Please feel free to give me suggestions about books that you would like to see in our library, and I will do my best to order them for your use. Please remember to return your books by the date stamped on the date due slip in your book. Fines accumulate very quickly!
