About NIE Netherlands Stichting Krant in de Klas (Newspapers in the Classroom) was founded in 1976 by Dutch Newspaper Publishers’ Association Three objectives: -Promote literacy and readership -Promote media literacy -Promote citizenship through newspapers in education, for all levels of education (incl. language courses for adults)

Newspapers as a source for lifelong learning Educational role of newspapers is visible in shift from merely ‘bringing’ to ‘explaining’ the news. Newspapers: … constantly keep us updated about new developments in politics, economics, society etc. … provide background information, context … explain the effects of these developments on our lives … advise citizens about how to exercise their rights
