Presentation transcript:

Artios Summer 2013 Session 1 Thomas Chow, Peter Kim & Jim Kwak

 Lecture ◦ Overview of the job search process ◦ Getting into the mind of an interviewer ◦ Types of Interviews ◦ Basic interview structure ◦ Making a good first impression – Part 1  Written exercise  Break into small groups ◦ Share written exercise reponses  Interview drilling ◦ Pair up: 1 person ask questions (provided), the other take notes/provide feedback ◦ Switch roles

 What is a successful job search strategy? ◦ Look at the numbers:  Networking / Internal referral – 70-80%  Let people know that you are looking for job  Create contact list  Bring resume to the desk of hiring manager-put resume to internal database  Responding to job listings – 5-15%  General: Craigslist, Simplyhired, Indeed, LinkedIn  Biotech jobs: Biospace  Technical jobs: Dice  Third party recruiters – 10-20%  Career fair  Necessity of due diligence ◦ Job search spreadsheet ◦ Customizing resume and cover letter every time

How urgent/enthusiastic are you REALLY?

 Phone screening  On-site interview ◦ 1st, 2nd, 3rd round? ◦ 1:1 interview or panel? ◦ All-day interview? ◦ Social setting? ◦ Technical/skills challenge?  Who is interviewing? ◦ HR department? ◦ Hiring manager? ◦ Team members?

You need to understand the mindset of the INTERVIEWER

Interviewing is a GAME.

 First Impressions ◦ Greetings ◦ Introductions ◦ Chit Chat  Answers ◦ You Answer Their Questions  Questions ◦ You Ask Your Questions  Closing  Follow Up

 If You Know Their Name, Use It ◦ "Hi Bob, it’s a pleasure to meet you”  The Most Important Aspect Of This Portion Of The Interview Is Energy And A Friendly And Engaging Demeanor ◦ People will take 90% less ability for 10% more attitude  Know the Current Headline News ◦ You Need To Know Your Industry News

 How The Question Is Going To Sound: ◦ “Tell me about yourself...” ◦ “Give me a quick rundown...” ◦ “Walk me through your resume...”  The Fundamental Purpose Of This Question Is To... ◦ Quickly Asses Your Communication Skills On A Multi- faceted Question ◦ Discover Your Self Image ◦ Provide a Baseline Of Data To Allow For Interruptions

 You have two minutes to respond ◦ 1 Or 2 Minutes may not be enough to cover everything, but unless you are engaging, you won’t keep anyone’s attention for more than 2 minutes… ◦ Have a 2 minute version, and another where you can add 1-2 minutes on top if the interviewer seems engaged  Start With A Brief Personal Review ◦ 30 seconds is okay, do NOT Go Over A Minute  If You Are A Recent College Graduate ◦ You can spend up to 1 minute discussing Your academic experiences ◦ You can briefly touch on high school, but focus mainly on college  The Remaining Time, Review Your Professional History ◦ Highlight Your Goals And Accomplishments ◦ It’s Ok To Skip A Job - If Not Critical - To Make Your Points

 Pick Your Accomplishments In Advance ◦ Pick 3-5 accomplishments that are tailored to the opportunity ◦ Choose wisely and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE  Avoid Chronologies At All Costs ◦ Don’t give a play-by- play, it will sound awful ◦ Don’t rehash your resume. (sound like cover letter advice?)  Organize The Core Of Your Answer Around Concepts ◦ Use a simple outline to communicate clearly the key drivers of your behavior

Don’t try this at the office!

 This Is What It Should Sound Like: ◦ “Bob, I want an offer, and here's why. When I look at my opportunities, my key criteria will be quality of opportunity, culture fit, and quality of people. When I analyze those factors at Procter, I see a perfect fit.”  Prepare It Beforehand ◦ You Need Two Or Three Reasons Why You Want To Work There  Close At The End Of The Interview ◦ It’s Okay To Close As You’re Walking Out The Door
