You balance equations everyday, but you may not realize. For example, you can write a word equation for bicycles. All you’re doing is gathering four main parts to make a whole.

A reactant is the first half of the equation. It is all of the ingredients needed to make the product.

The product is the right side of the equation, also known as the final answer. The product is all of the reactants together and they should balance out.

Reactant Product NH 3 (aq) + HCl (aq) Ammonia hydrochloric acid NH 4 Cl (aq) Ammonium chloride

 First, you determine if it is balanced or unbalanced  If unbalanced, figure out what is wrong.  use coefficients to add what is missing to make the reactant and products equal.

Unbalanced equation: -F + W + H + P  FW 2 HP 2 -This is unbalanced because it does not show the number of wheels and pedals needed in the reactants part of the equation, but it shows on the product side of the equation. Therefore, it is unbalanced. Balanced equation: -F + 2W + H + 2P  FW 2 HP 2 -This is balanced because there are equal numbers of each part on both sides of the equation.
