Anders Celsius An astronomer who invented the Celsius temperature scale, the most widely used in the world today.

Only the Beginning.. Anders Celsius was born in Uppsala, Sweden, on November 27, 1701. He wanted a life in the world of academics so he studied at the University of Uppsala. That is where his father taught. In 1730 he was awarded a professorship there also.

About the Celsius Scale It is a 100 point scale Different Boiling Temperatures When Celsius introduced his scale in 1747, it was the reverse of today's scale. It had the boiling point of water being zero degrees and the freezing point being one hundred degrees. For years it was referred to as the Swedish thermometer. In 1948 most of the world adopted the Celsius scale.

“Centigrade” For a long time, the Celsius scale was called "centigrade." “Centi" means one-hundredth. Each degree Celsius is one-hundredth of the way between the temperatures of freezing and boiling for water.

The left side of this thermometer is the Celsius side The left side of this thermometer is the Celsius side. The right is the Fahrenheit side.

The Celsius scale is important to the world. The Celsius temperature scale is part of the "metric system" of measurement and is used mostly throughout the whole world.

He was a math wiz. Celsius was not only an astronomer, but also a physicist. He and an assistant discovered that the aurora borealis had an influence on compass needles.

Astronomer & Writer Even though Anders was an astronomer and math whiz, he was also a writer. He wrote two books. They were called Dissertatio de Nova Methodo Distantiam Solis a Terra Determinandi written in 1730. And the other one was called De Observationibus pro Figura Telluris Determinanda in Gallia Habitis, Disquisitio written in 1738.

Eventually Anders life came to an end.. Anders Celsius died of tuberculosis on April 25th 1744. After the death of Celsius in 1744 the scale was reversed to its present form. He was buried at Gamla Uppsala Kyrkogård, in Uppsala, Sweden.
