Laying on of Hands 1 Timothy 5.17-25

1.Blessing-OT Jacob reached out his right hand and put it on Ephraim's head, though he was the younger, and crossing his arms, he put his left hand on Manasseh's head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn. Then he blessed Joseph and said, "May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day, the Angel who has delivered me from all harm may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they increase greatly upon the earth." Genesis 48.14-16

1.Blessing-NT Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there Matthew 19.13-15 And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them Mark 10.16

2.Healing Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean Mark 1.41 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live. Mark 5.22-23 Jesus said to them, Only in his home town, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honour. He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them Mark 6.4-5

2.Healing Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Mark 8.23,25 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Luke 4.40 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean! And immediately the leprosy left him. Luke 51.3

2.Healing In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight. Acts 9.12 There was an estate near by that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably. His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. Acts 28.7-9

3.Consecration He is to lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him Leviticus 1.4 He is to lay his hand on the head of his offering and slaughter it at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Then Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood against the altar on all sides. Leviticus 3.2 He is to present the bull at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. He is to lay his hand on its head and slaughter it before the LORD Leviticus 4.4

3.Consecration And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22.19-20

4.Empowering Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, Brother Saul, the Lord— Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here— has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptised... Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ Acts 9.17-18,22

4.Empowering Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you 1 Tim 4.14 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands 2 Tim 1.6

5.Ordination-OT You are to bring the Levites before the LORD, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. Numbers 8.10 So the LORD said to Moses, Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him. Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. Give him some of your authority so that the whole Israelite community will obey him.... Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses. Numbers 27.18-23

5.Ordination-NT In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers... While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’. So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13.1-3 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you 1 Tim 4.14

5.Ordination-NT In the church at Antioch....while they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them’. So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off. Acts 13.1-3 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you 1 Tim 4.14 Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands 1 Tim 5.22

5.Ordination-1 Timothy Call – the next link in the chain Character - The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not cannot be hidden. verses 24-25

5.Ordination-1 Timothy Competence -The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honour, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. Verse 17 Co-operation - For the Scripture says, Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain, and The worker deserves his wages. Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning. Verse 18-20

5.Ordination-1 Timothy Charge -charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions...Verse 21
