Shakespeare Vocabulary Mrs. McCoid English 2

Act –One of the five major divisions of text in a Shakespeare play. Every Shakespeare play has five acts. Acts usually involve a change of scene. Allusion –A reference to a famous person, place or thing from history, religion, or geography that the writer uses to draw connection. Aside –When a character says something not heard by other characters. A character might quickly say something to himself under his/her breath or whisper to another character briefly.

Conflict –A struggle between a character and opposing forces, including self, nature, other characters & society. Dramatic Irony –When the audience knows something that the other characters do not. Farce-Comedy –A play that relies upon silly humor for laughs.

Hyperbole –Exaggeration. For example, Katharina is a million times meaner than Bianca. Pun –A play on words based on the similarity in sound between two words with different meanings. Scene –A division of an act. Theme –A main idea in a piece of literature.
