Presentation transcript:

Ephesians 4-5 20 But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. 21 Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, 22 throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. 23 Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. 24 Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

Ephesians 4-5 25 So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. 26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”[d] Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Ephesians 4-5 28 If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. 29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Ephesians 4-5 30 And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own,[e] guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

Ephesians 4-5 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ephesians 4-5 5 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. 2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[f] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Ecclesiology and (Christian) Ethics Rick Wright Church of the Nations 11th Sunday of Pentecost (B)

Ephesians 4-5 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another… Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Structure of Ephesians (letter) 1. Greeting 2. Prayer 3. Main body 4. Instructions 5. Farewell What is the gospel? (= basic message of Christian faith) What is God trying to do through Jesus Christ his Son?

Every part of Ephesians (letter) Greeting -> “To the saints (holy ones) who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus” Prayer -> “And he (God) put all things under (Christ) and has made him the head over all things for the church… which is his body… the fullness of him who fills all in all” Gospel (good news) in terms of ecclesiology

Every part of Ephesians (letter) Main body -> “But now in Christ Jesus you who were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace… in his flesh he made both groups into one and has broken down the wall of hostility between us”

Instructions Because God did… Therefore… Theology -> soteriology -> ecclesiology -> ethics How we demonstrate what God has done in Christ through how we live (= differently) “Once you were… but now you are…” New life in Christ -> concrete ways we can understand (and describe)

Christian ethics in Ephesians 4-5 Variety! Old Testament… New Testament… philosophy + wisdom Words… actions Inside church… outside church (larger society) Reasons! Not just “do this” but why… Not rules or directions! A way (direction) of life (~ dao or gil)

Christian ethics and baptism Baptized… became new person… received Holy Spirit… Baptist Christians => baptism is symbol of change that already happened Paul => baptism is ritual moment when change happens

Why is this important? “Let no one deceive you…” (= ???) Christian ethics challenges + critiques the larger society and culture! Opposition from outside Opposition from inside!?! “Gnosticizing Christians” Right knowledge > moral issues???
