2 –If your child is not completing assignments because the assignments are too hard, this is a red flag! Sources of Homework or School Frustration Confidence Motivation Skill Deficiency Organization Research has shown that homework affects achievement in school

3 3-C s CARE CONCERN COMMUNICATION The process of encouragement works in place of rewards. Encourage independence shown when attempting homework.

4 The Huntington Formula Together … –Define agreeable expectations –Commit to achieve expectations –Strive to fulfill expectations All components are needed to achieve success.

5 The “Learning Atmosphere” at Home Study Space … –Consistent –Organized with little or no clutter –No distractions

6 The “Learning Atmosphere” at Home –Dictionary, thesaurus and atlas –Computer access –School books –Assignment pad or planner Tools … –Good lighting –Desk/table with chair –Pens, pencils, scratch paper, good paper

7 The Huntington Method Create a basic structure Check homework assignment pad or planner daily Be consistent Build on first successes Praise every effort for good or improving grades Contact teachers Remember, “follow-through” is the key to a successful homework experience.

8 Most Common Homework Problems Does not do his or her best work Refuses to do homework Fails to bring homework home Takes all night to complete assignments Won’t do homework on his or her own Waits until last minute to do homework Won’t do homework if you’re not home Your special problem

9 PROBLEM: REFUSES to do homework Suggestions: –State expectations use the 3-Cs –Check knowledge of materials and reading skills –Set consequences “no homework = no privileges” –Work with classroom teacher –Enforce mandatory homework time

10 PROBLEM: Takes ALL NIGHT to complete assignments Suggestions : –State expectations use the 3-Cs –Select environment conducive to learning –Review expectations - set a time limit for homework –Challenge with a timer

11 PROBLEM: Won’t do homework on his or her OWN Suggestions : –State expectations child makes 2 attempts before seeking help –Review “chunking” technique –Foster independence –Be consistent
