oneone CS-1A Objective: To explore and examine stereotypes in order to identify characteristics of a scientist CSI Note: Can you take on the role of a scientist in order to identify the mystery substance? Drill: In your Drill Book draw a picture of Scientist Chris, a typical scientist. Include the environment in which Chris is working along with any equipment Chris is using.

oneone CS-1A 1. Look at your picture of Chris. Complete the following statement giving your ideas of a scientist. Make sure to include at least 3 supporting details. A scientist is a person that ________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________

oneone CS-1A 2. Discussion Question: What characteristics do most of our class pictures have in common? a. ________________ b. ________________ c. ________________ d. ________________ e. ________________ f. ________________

oneone CS-1A A scientist is a man that works in a lab. They work with test tubes and chemicals at a lab table. They wear lab coats and most use goggles.

oneone CS-1A 3. Do you agree with our class perception of a scientist? SEE your answer. I ________________ with our class perception of a scientist. _________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________

oneone CS-1A 4. A stereotype is a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion. Does your picture represent a stereotype? __________________________________ __________________________________

oneone CS-1A People’s ideas of what scientist are, are often stereotypes. Think about how the world around us is explored. Do all scientists wear lab coats and work in a laboratory? Some do, but some also work on top of the highest mountains, in the deepest parts of the oceans, and as far out as space. Many men and women of every culture are scientists. Just as varied as to how scientists appear and where they work is what they do. Listed below are some of the scientists that may be discussed this year in your science class.

oneone CS-1A Homework: 1. Look at each of the 6 prefixes listed below. Use some resource to identify the meaning of each prefix. Use only 1 or 2 words. 2. Then using the meaning of each prefix, match the scientists with what they do! Choose the best answer for each.
