Creating opportunities for success in English

Different pathways Our students are grouped by ability, so they benefit from carefully tailored teaching to meet their needs All pupils will follow courses in English Language and English Literature Texts and tasks are differentiated to provide an appropriate level of challenge

Two bites of the cherry Most pupils will have a first attempt at an English Language exam at the end of year 10 Pupils who achieve their target grade will focus on English Literature only in year 11 and follow an enriched curriculum Pupils who miss their target grade will have a second attempt at English Language in Year 11, whilst also studying English Literature

AQA vs IGCSE The AQA GCSE and the Cambridge IGCSE are of equal value. Both assess the core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Our pupils are prepared for both qualifications The AQA GCSE requires several pieces of ‘controlled assessment’ as well as an exam The Cambridge IGCSE does not require any ‘controlled assessment’ and is comprised of 3 exams

Year 10 AQA Creative writing 1 CA AQA Spoken Language CA AQA Extended reading CA AQA Creative writing 2 CA IGCSE preparation: speaking and listening test reading exam writing exam This is where the core skills are taught and developed This is where the skills are first tested

How you can help Encourage your daughter to read: reading for pleasure and to extend the curriculum Check she does her English homework every week Discuss your ideas and opinions together, prompt her to explain her reasons Borrow or buy Exam study guides Find ‘Sparknotes’ on the internet to support her study of set texts
