Adverbs An adverb is a word that describes, or tells about, a verb.

Adverbs Some adverbs tell how an action happens.

Examples Firefighters and police officers work hard for you. Hard describes the verb work.

Examples The librarian asked us to work quietly in the library. Quietly describes the verb work.

Examples The gym teacher said I ran fast. Fast describes the verb ran.

Adverbs Most adverbs answer the question “How?”

Example Juan carefully crossed the street. How did Juan cross? He crossed carefully. Carefully describes the verb cross.
