Junior Achievement 5.3 “The Job At Hand”

It’s Vocabulary Review Time! Teamwork: Teamwork: The cooperative efforts by members of a group to achieve the same overall goal. The cooperative efforts by members of a group to achieve the same overall goal.

“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.” - Henry Ford

Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?

When you are a part of a team, why is it important for you to carry out your responsibilities as well as you possibly can?

Today we will be looking at the importance of teamwork and the importance of doing your job to the best of your abilities.

In order to do this, your team needs use a Mission Statement to guide you.

Do you remember what a “Mission Statement” is? (Remember? We learned this way back at the beginning…)

A Mission Statement is a short description of a company’s core purpose. It answers the question, “Why do we exist?”

Please turn to page 72 in your student workbook. See if you can identify the three businesses by their Mission Statements.

Ready to see if you are right?

Business Number One? “We fulfill dreams through the experience of motorcycling, by providing to motorcyclists and to the general public an expanding line of motorcycles and branded products and services in selected market segments.” “We fulfill dreams through the experience of motorcycling, by providing to motorcyclists and to the general public an expanding line of motorcycles and branded products and services in selected market segments.”

Harley Davidson

Business Number Two? “ People love our clothes and trust our company. We will market the most appealing and widely worn casual clothing in the world. We will clothe the world.” “ People love our clothes and trust our company. We will market the most appealing and widely worn casual clothing in the world. We will clothe the world.”

Levi Strauss & Co.

Business Number Three? “ To be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, services and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world.

The Walt Disney Company

Now your team will have the opportunity to develop a mission statement for your business. Please turn to page 73 in your workbook. Once you have created your mission statement, select a team member share it with the class.

Job Responsibilities: The specific tasks and duties of your job. The specific tasks and duties of your job.

Don’t worry. You don’t have to memorize each and every job responsibility that you will have at JA BizTown.

But you should have a general idea of what you will be expected to do.

Let’s look at a Business Web Please turn to page 74 in your workbooks.

A Business Web shows how each of your jobs are interconnected. Radio Station Disc Jockey 1/ Programmer Organizes tapes And plays music. CFO Writes payroll checks And pays bills On time. Ad Agent/ Reporter Collects all The ads and money Station Engineer Answer phone Disc Jockey 2/ Programmer Reads commercials And news items Station Manager Assists others

Each job is important. Your job is necessary to the overall functioning of your business. You all must work together as a team to be successful. Your job is necessary to the overall functioning of your business. You all must work together as a team to be successful. Your Business Employee

Turn to page 74 to complete the Business Web Worksheet. Your business name goes in the middle. Try to think of a very short description for each job.

Remember, everyone plays an important role in the operation of your business!

Congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a real, working company! (Don’t forget to complete the Word Map on page 75.)
