OUTPUT DEVICES OF INFORMATION SYSTEM 25 JULY 2005 LOWER 6 TH COMPUTING LESSON Prepared by:T.Fina

PRINTER Printer is used to print input document as output display. Types of PRINTERS: - (1)DOT MATRIX PRINTER (2)INK JET PRINTER (3)LASER PRINTER

DOT MATRIX PRINTER Often used with PCs. It is an impact printer which produce its image by striking the paper through a ribbon. Its print head consists of small pins, varying between 9 and 24 depending on the manufacture. A 24 pin print head will produce a better quality of print than a 9 pin print head because the dots are closer together. Dot matrix printer is extremely versatile with most of them able to print in condensed, standard and enlarged mode in bold or normal print.

INK JET PRINTER Ink Jet printer is a popular type of non-impact printer. A popular colour inkjet printer such as Hewlett Packard’s DeskJet 660C. They are compact and quiet and offer resolution almost as good as a laser printer. However, they are slow in operation; a complex combination of text and colour can take up to 8 minutes for a single sheet.

LASER PRINTER Laser printer is becoming increasingly popular and suitable for desktop publishing applications. Laser printer use a process similar to a photocopying machine, with toner (powdered ink) being transferred to the page and then fused onto it by heat and pressure. A laser printer produces output of very high quality at a typical speed in the region of 10 pages per minute and is virtually silent in operation.

COM (COMPUTER OUTPUT TO MICROFILM) Where images are recorded onto photographic film which can then be stored and read by a special reader. Many different types of film are used including 16 mm and 35 mm rolls of cartridge film, with each roll capable of holding over 3000 pages of computer printout. Microfilm sheets also known as ‘microfiche’ which can be used to hold between pages of information per sheet. ADVANTAGES - Very fast with over 100,000 cps achieved by some microfilmers. - Cheap and copies can be made easily - Very compact

SCREEN Also called as the monitor, CRT (cathode ray tube) or VDU (visual display unit) and is an important output device. The most widely used screens are generally in size of 13 inch or 15 inch TV screen and in ‘character mode’ display 80 characters on a line with a maximum of 25 lines. Larger A4 size screens are available and are particularly useful for desktop publishing allowing the user to see a whole page on the screen.

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY Is used on laptop computers where weight and size have to be kept to a minimum. They are now available in high resolution and colour, giving a display comparable to a regular CRT display. The viewing angle is however more limited.

PLOTTER A plotter is an output device used to produce high quality line drawings such as building plans or electronic circuits. They are generally classified as pen (vector plotter) or penless (raster plotters). Pen plotters are low in price and hold a large share of the plotter market. Penless plotters include electrostatic plotters, thermal plotters and laser plotters they are used where drawings of high densities are required for example drawings of machines printed circuit boards or maps.
