Welcome to our Reading Explorers Open House for Cascade Ridge

 Reading Explorers, also referred to as LAP (Learning Assistance Program), is Washington’s state-funded program that provides additional academic support to eligible students.  LAP funds are used first to target reading intervention for students in grades K-4.  It provides supplemental reading support to selected students.  All elementary schools in Issaquah receive LAP FTE. What is Reading Explorers?

 Small groups of students meet for 30 minutes several days a week for Guided Reading.  Students receive literacy instruction in their classrooms, as well as in Reading Explorers.  Students may exit the program when  based on district assessments, the student is meeting standard and no longer requires support;  parent(s) request that the student be exited. Reading intervention

 Our curriculum focuses on research-based strategies, supports learning in the classroom, and gives additional opportunities for reading and writing.  Students participate in Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) lessons.  Phonemic awareness and phonics  Reading books  Writing about reading  Letter/word work  Home Reading Program Reading Explorers Curriculum

 Get ideas for good books to read from teachers, friends, and libraries.  Share reading as a family by reading together every day and talking about books.  Pick fun, unusual places to read (outside in a tree house, in a fort with pillows in the family room, etc.).  Young readers enjoy funny stories and books that present new and interesting information.  Find books that match your reader’s interests.  Invite your reader to choose books.  Stay positive and give encouragement. A Few Ways to Motivate Your Reader at Home Source: The Parent Institute

 “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents” (Emilie Buchwald).  “To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark” (Victor Hugo).  “Oh, magic hour, when a child first knows she can read printed words!” (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, 1943)  “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island” (Walt Disney).  “Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks” (Dr. Seuss).
