Outline/Vocab (on your course outline sheet) A. Styles 1. Sliding 2. Swinging 3. Fixed 4. Double-hung 5. Skylights B. Treatments 1. Draperies/curtains 2. Shades, shutters, blinds 3. Decorative top treatments

Window Styles: Sliding  Can operate vertically or horizontally  Double-hung  Vertical sliding window  Simple, good for ventilation and light  Can be opened from the top or bottom

Window Styles: Sliding  Horizontal:  Windows with 2 or 3 sashes that open like a sliding door.

Window Styles: Swinging  Can be hinged at top, bottom, or sides  Casement:  Opens and closes with a crank  Swings outward

Window Styles: Swinging  Awning:  Hinged at the top, swings outward at the bottom  Provides good ventilation and rain protection

Window Styles: Swinging  Hopper:  Hinged at the bottom, swings into a room at the top  Often used in basements

Window Styles: Swinging  Jalousie:  Series of horizontal glass slats that open and close with a crank  Good for ventilation

Window Styles: Fixed  Glass blocks:  Provides light while preserving visual privacy

Window Styles: Fixed  Stained glass:  When used as a focal point, should be left untreated

Window Styles: Fixed  Palladian:  3 part window with a central arched section flanked by 2 narrow rectangular sections

Window Styles: Combination  Bay window:  Projects outward from the exterior wall.  Large fixed window in center with small double-hung windows on both sides.  Not as much ventilation as a regular double-hung

Window Styles: Skylights  Normally located in the ceiling or roof.  Allows natural light into a room without exterior walls.  Good choice for a room located in the center of the house with no windows.

Pleated, lined panels of fabric Good choice for privacy Often found in formal rooms Extend to the floor The different types are named for how they operate (draw draperies, stationary draperies) Window Treatments: Draperies

Flat fabric panels with a pocket hem at the top, which slips into a curtain rod. Constructed of unlined fabric that is sheer to medium weight Type of fabric determines amount of light, insulation, or privacy Should fall to the length of the sill, apron, or floor Window Treatments: Curtains

Horizontal panels which cover the lower part of a window Often used with a top treatment Window Treatments: Café Curtains

Softly pleated fabric hanging in a curved line at the top of a window Window Treatments: Swag

Horizontal fabric treatment across the top of the window Also used to hide drapery or curtain hardware Window Treatments: Valance

Horizontal treatment Usually constructed of wood, padded and covered with fabric Some are carved wood that is painted or stained Window Treatments: Cornice

Constructed in the same manner as a cornice but also extends down each side of window Window Treatments: Lambrequin

 Informal  Variety of colors and opaqueness Window Treatments: Roller Shades

 Fabric folds into horizontal pleats when raised  Might hang flat when closed Window Treatments: Roman Shades

 Similar to roman in operation; fabric takes on a balloon shape when raised Window Treatments: Balloon Shades

 Accordion or honeycomb styles; contemporary styling  Solid colors, patterns, textures; opaque or translucent Window Treatments: Pleated Shades

Covers part or all of a window Usually made of wood; hinged together Window Treatments: Shutters

Series of evenly spread slats that may be opened or closed by cords Allow French doors to function properly while providing privacy Window Treatments: Blinds

Activity #1  Label Each Window STYLE on the Sheet (front and back)  Draw/color a different Window TREATMENT on each window and correctly label the treatment  You can even use real fabric if you want to!
