Why do we care? Pollution is absolutely ruining everything. Water Air Life There isn’t much space left to put all trash We are running out of daily materials, like plastic for water bottles Solution? RECYCLE!

Steps to creating an effective recycling program Estimate weekly landfill costs. This can show much recycling can save money for the city, and how much people pollute weekly Estimate average recycled garbage at the home, weekly. This can show how much a person recycles, which will direct the city to great savings Estimate the value of each recyclable material. This can show how much old materials can cost to reuse. Save money for the city, again! Estimate how much money in total can be saved by the city, and if separating materials saves a lot or little. This will show how much the city is losing to landfills, and what it is gaining from recycling old materials Survey local population to get input on separating recycling materials at home. Show benefits the city could give to the city from the extra money.

Garbage trucks and cans Cost for one garbage truck delivery is $100 One garbage truck can hold about 3,170 gallons One garbage can holds about 30 gallons One garbage truck can hold about 106 garbage cans

Landfill Costs Houses in Winston-Salem: about 89, 550 Trucks needed to collect all trash: 844 Approximate cost weekly: $84, 400

Average Recyclable Garbage Glass: 4lbs. 13oz. (4.8125lbs) Plastic: 1lbs. 4oz. (1.25lbs) Paper: 12lbs. 6oz. (12.5lbs)(0.00625tons) Metal: 15.5oz. (0.96875lbs)

Recyclables vs. Garbage

Value of recyclables Value of recyclable materials (approx.)….IF separated in the home: Glass: $0.48 Plastic: $0.13 Paper: $0.13 Metal: $0.73

Cost of separation Cost to separate recyclables that are not separated in the home: Glass: $0.14 Plastic: $0.04 Paper: $0.34 Metal: $0.47

In one house…

If the recyclables are separated… The government will gain $25.24

If the recyclables are not separated… The Government will gain $24.25

In Winston-Salem….

If everyone separates their recyclables… The Government will gain $2,260,242

If no-one separates their recyclables… The Government will gain $2,171,587.50

Savings! If the recyclables are separated in the homes, the Government will save $88,654.50 weekly, & 354, 618 monthly, and $4, 255, 416 yearly… So… Recyclables must be separated in the home because it saves LOTS of money!

Steps to get support for the program Survey locals of Winston-Salem on their views of recycling Decide if people would be willing to separate recyclables from non-recyclables at home Find ways to encourage the population of the city to cooperate with the recycling program Ask the population what benefits they would like to receive for the city if the program is successful

Separating at home Will people be willing to separate their recyclables from their non-recyclables at home? - we surveyed locals of Winston-Salem to find out if they would mind separating their recyclables at their homes - almost everyone (97%) said that if it saved money or provided benefits, they would separate their recyclables themselves to help with the new recycling program

Encouragement for separation What incentives or fines should the city use to get people to separate their recyclables at home? - we also surveyed people living in Winston-Salem to see what they thought the city should do to persuade everyone to separate their recyclables at home - about 70% of the people that we surveyed said that they thought the city should provide a $100 fine for everyone who didn’t separate their own recyclables - the other 30% said that they thought the city shouldn’t implement a fine, but just add benefits to the city with the extra money saved if everyone separated at home

Benefits from separating Since separating your own recyclables at home saves money, what should the saved money go towards to benefit the city? The people we surveyed also answered the question above, so we would know what they thought needed improving in their city About half of the people that were surveyed said they wanted the extra money to improve infrastructure, such as fixing roads and bridges About 15% said that the money should go towards the uninsured, to help them pay for their insurance The rest of the people that were surveyed wanted the money to help the unemployed find jobs and not become broke while looking to be hired
