Notes le 10 mars L’article défini et le partitif (The Definite Article and the Partitive) In French, you use the definite article (le, la, l’, les) when talking about something in a general sense. Les enfants aiment le pain. (Children like bread.) Marie adore la confiture. (Marie loves jam.) Je déteste les épinards. (I hate spinach.)

The partitive expresses an unspecified amount. It is the equivalent of “some”, “any”, or no word at all in English. Est-ce que tu voudrais du beurre avec ton pain? (Would you like some butter with your bread?) Oui, et je voudrais de la confiture, aussi. (Yes, and I’d like some jam, too.)

The partitive is formed by combining de with the appropriate definite article. de + le = du Je voudrais du jambon. de + la = de laJe voudrais de la crème. de + l’ = de l’Je voudrais de l’eau. de + les = desJe voudrais des fraises.

Le partitif au négatif (The Negative Partitive) All forms of the partitive (du, de la, de l’, and des) change to de (d’) after a negative. Est-ce que tu veux de la salade? (Do you want some salad?) Non, je ne veux pas de salade. (No, I don’t want any salad.) Il y a des oeufs dans le frigo? (Are there any eggs in the fridge?) Non, il n’y a plus d’œufs. (No, there aren’t any eggs left.)
