A Year in the Life of an Internet2 Neternship Team Gigi Choy Rachelle Hom

Overview Neternship? Why did we get involved? How do we communicate virtually? Do we need to be networking experts? Do we need to be familiar with all the latest networking technology? How do we coordinate across the country?

The Cal Poly Neterns: Jimson RachelleGigi Seth

And our advisors: Dr. Franz Kurfess T. Charles Yun

Our Pride and Joy

What is a “Neternship”? InterNet2 + Internship = Neternship A virtual internship Students across campuses collaborate with an Internet2 representative on an advanced network project

Why did we decide to get involved? Different from other university projects Key Difference: Remote Interaction More collaboration Exposure to new technologies Practical experience Make contacts with professionals in industry Real world projects

The Task High speed file transfer project UI Design

Problem 1: Communication Project organizer is on the other side of the country. How can we gather our project requirements? How can we get help quickly from experts from all over the country?

The Solutions: List of fellow neterns and Internet2 members, allowed us to quickly obtain feedback from a diverse audience Project Website Phone & Video Conference

Video Conferencing Interact and talk as though everyone is at the same table Clear enough to show examples and pictures up on the screen

Problem 2: TCP, BDP, HPN… what? Not enough knowledge about networking Little knowledge of available technologies Modifications to SCP (HPN-SCP patch)

Contacts to the rescue! Local contacts at Cal Poly: Fellow students (team members, lab assistant) Professors (advisor, networking professor) Networking staff Remote contacts: Internet2 members Chris Rapier at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center Individuals in Industry, Subject Matter Experts

Problem 3: Access to Technology Our own computers did not have connection to the technology needed

Ask and you shall receive! Network Labs at Cal Poly Connection to Abilene network Isolated internal network Dedicated machines Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center

Problem 4: Coordination Difficult to find a time to meet as a team Merging work Time difference with the East Coast

The Wonders of Technology! Virtual meetings VNC Access the lab machine remotely Collaborate on tasks at the same time *

And the Wonders of Charles All knowing Kept us up-to-date on what was happening in Internet2 community Informed us of useful technologies and side projects that could be further investigated

Our Pride and Joy

Gained Practical Experience Epitomized Cal Poly’s motto of “Learn by Doing” Interacting with peers and superiors in a professional manner Communicating technically and succinctly Conferencing Internet2 Member Meeting experience Technical presentation skills Preparing ourselves for industry or Grad school

The Moral of the Story… All students should get involved in a Neternship!
