Literary devices with “annabel lee” Get ready meet one of America’s biggest creepers! Literary devices with “annabel lee”

Directions Open up Google Drive and create a New Document in your Language Arts Folder. Label this New Document “Poetry Daily Work”.

alliteration definition: the repetition of the consonant (non-vowel letters) sound at the beginning of two or more words Examples: “do or die” “the sweet smell of success” “now or never” “safe and sound”

personification definition: Giving humanlike (hence PERSON) qualities to something that is not a person/human. It is NOT animation! Examples: The trees danced in the breeze. My garbage disposal vomited last night’s dinner all over the sink.

repetition definition: the repeating of words or phrases done for an obvious purpose, or to emphasize an idea Examples: Keeping time, time, time In a sort of Runic rhyme, To the paean of the bells Of the bells To the throbbing of the bells Of the bells, bells, bells --Edgar Allan Poe Question: What words, sounds or images are repeated in this poem?

(internal) rhyme definition: the repetition of the sound at the end of two or more words; occurs in the middle of the same line of poetry. Example: I will remember December the way I wish it to be. Not the way it was. Reality is over-rated.

(end) rhyme definition: the repetition of the sound at the end of two or more words; occurs at the end of lines. Example: This one has a little car. Say! What a lot of fish there are. Yes. Some are red. And some are blue. Some are old. And some are new. Some are sad. And some are glad. And some are very, very bad.

Before we read the poem… SILENTLY and to YOURSELF, read the “Meet the Writer” section on page 263

Now that you’ve “met” the writer… Skim the poem, “Annabel Lee,” which on pages 261-262. Pick out ONE stanza (poem paragraph) that you will share. With your neighbor, take turns reading the stanza that you each chose. When you have each read your stanzas, discuss what they could be about. Now that you have “met” the writer, discussed some things with your partner, write down a prediction that you have for this poem: I think this poem will be about ________ because _________. Add to your Poetry Daily Work document with today’s date, Annabel Lee as the heading.

Post Read Make a list. We know that this poem has some of the figurative language devices that we took notes on Monday. Type at least one example of each of the following in your Daily File . Make sure to label which device it is like this: personification- repetition- alliteration- end rhyme- internal rhyme- Restate the question & write in complete sentences. Based on the “Meet the Writer” section (page 263), what influences from the writer’s background can you see in this poem? Explain. Restate the question & write in complete sentences. Which theme do you think fits this poem better AND briefly explain why: “Love can never be separated, even by death.” “There’s someone for everyone.”

Share Share your responses for questions 1-3 with a partner. Be prepared to share these with the class.
