Do Now- 10-5-11 Take out your fact sheet from the video we watched in class yesterday. Get with a partner other than the person sitting next to you and exchange your facts with them.
A. Plate Tectonics The theory that earth’s surface is divided into several major, slow-moving plates or pieces. 1. Layers of the Earth- Like an Apple or a Peach Crust- 10-25 Miles Thick Mantle 1,800 Miles Thick- hot rock like material Outer Core- molten or melted Inner Core solid 2. Pangaea The name given to Earth’s landmasses when it formed one huge supercontinent. 3. Continental Drift Theory Forces within earth caused Pangaea to break apart into continental plates and drift apart. 4. Mountain formation tectonic plates push together two plates collide and one moves up over the other
B. Earthquakes Plates shake causing an earthquake A fault is a break in Earth’s crust where movement occurs.
C. Volcanoes Plates push against each other creating cracks in the crust onto Earth’s surface. Heat within the mantle causes rock in the lower plate to melt. This molten rock is magma. Lava is the name for magma that has escaped onto the surface.
