Presentation transcript:

Purpose of Ecoed.net Provide the technical structure for ecology educators to share digital resources they have developed. Catalog existing ESA resources of interest to educators in one location that can be searched and browsed. Serve as a catalyst for the development and publication of new, innovative teaching resources. Raise the status of teaching as scholarship using the peer review process and citation. Peer review of photographs, figures, and tables is active Resource review 2-3 times/year. Next submission deadline is August 29! Expanded spring review will include scientific figures and tables EcoEd Digital Library is funded through the Biology Pathway (BEN), which is administered by AAAS and funded through NSDL Ecoed.net Advisory Board: David Kirschtel, chair ( CUAHSI ) Ken Klemow, Visual Resource Editor (Wilkes University) Ana Luz Porzecanski (AMNH) Larry Cahoon (UNC Wilmington) Jerry Krueger (South Dakota State University) Dan Perlman (Brandeis University) Eleanor Sterling (AMNH) Recent Developments EcoEd Digital Library: ESA’s Digital Teaching Library Jennifer G. Riem 1 and Kenneth M. Klemow 2 1 Ecological Society of America, 2 Wilkes University EcoEd Digital Library is ESA’s searchable online catalog of resources for teaching undergraduate ecology. Using EcoEd Digital Library, faculty can find free teaching resources that are peer- reviewed for quality, scientific accuracy, and pedagogical use. Teaching resources include photographs, figures, tables, Ecology 101 articles, Issues in Ecology, laboratory exercises, and simulation programs. Resources can be browsed by ecological concept or searched by keyword. The long-term goal for the library is to build and maintain a comprehensive catalog of user- developed teaching resources. Through peer review and citation, we seek to raise the scholarship of teaching in ecology in undergraduate education. Faculty who have developed their own visual resources (photographs, figures, tables) are encouraged to submit them to the library for peer review and publication. Faculty can also contribute to the library by providing feedback on the website and reviewing submissions. Current Activity Expand peer review process and catalog to include more resource types (lecture and laboratory activities; reviews) Further refine peer review process. Continue to build community among innovative ecology educators through resource use, contribution, and review, as well as Advisory Board involvement. To better serve that community, increase usability of website based on user feedback. Add collaborative tools to website to allow user ratings, comments, saved resources and searches, and workspaces for group work. Future Goals Main pageResource view Resource submission forms revised to be shorter and more user-friendly Now accepting photographs, figures, and tables for review in the fall of New review guidelines classroom activities under development.
