The Scales of Injustice (Mark 14:53-65; 15:1-15)

No trials were to occur during the night hours before the morning sacrifice. All trials were to be public – secret trials were forbidden. An accused person could not testify against himself. Someone was required to speak on behalf of the accused. Conviction required the testimony of two or three witnesses to be in perfect alignment; contradictions rendered testimony invalid. The high priest could not participate in questioning.

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come to you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted become of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear his name.” I Peter 4:12-16

“When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered he made no threats. INSTEAD, HE ENTRUSTED HIMSELF TO THE ONE WHO JUDGES JUSTLY.” I Pet. 2:23

Jesus suffered injustice to satisfy God’s justice. “’He himself bore our sins’” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; ‘By his wounds you have been healed.’” I Pet. 2:23

“Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and be his wounds we are healed.” Isa. 53:9

Jesus suffered injustice to satisfy God’s justice. Jesus took the fall to secure our freedom.
