1795 The first public university in the nation opens in Chapel Hill General Assembly begins funding other institutions of higher ed beginning with the State Colored Normal School in Fayetteville (now Fayetteville State University) 1877 Legislation creates three-campus UNC including UNC-CH, NC State College (now NCSU), and Woman’s College (now UNCG) 1931 Three more campuses join the University—UNC Charlotte, UNC Asheville, and UNC Wilmington 1969 A 16-Campus University State’s ten remaining public institutions consolidated to create the 16-campus University of North Carolina 1971
