Proficiency Assessment Students new to PPS get assessed at Family Support Centers for Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Basic Math skills. ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment) is administered once a year in spring to all ELLs. Letters of Notification of ESL Services and proficiency levels are mailed to students’ homes each fall.

Students eligible for ESL services receive: One ELD Period a day – English language instruction from an ESL Teacher during a regular class period. Students are grouped by proficiency levels Sheltered Instruction – a content class where English is used for providing content area (Language Arts, Social Studies, Science) instruction. Teachers use a variety of techniques to make content accessible to all learners.
