How Media has Westernized Indian Culture By: Tracey ramcharan, NAKIA WEST, DICKYI TSERING

Media has altered the way Indians look at problems Media has been generating awareness on several social problems in India, such as crime. It also westernizes the awareness of healthcare. Media has allowed India to dispose of Ayurveda medicine so there are many more chances to cure deathly diseases. Media has shown people that hygiene and nutrition are important for improving everyday life. Media has given Indians many new employment opportunities.

Music’s effect on Indian culture Music plays a huge role on how ideas are portrayed, especially in Indian films. The song “Ketaki Gulab Juhi” also incorporates India’s unique culture by the use of traditional instruments. The instruments along with the singers, who only use Hindi lyrics, help narrate the story Without music, film sales would not be as high. Newer themes equal newer less traditional Bollywood music.

Music They also have younger audiences so they have to incorporate music and themes that everyone can enjoy. In the film Tashan, the characters dress in more modern clothing and they speak English. In the song “Dil Dance Maare Re” English and Hindi languages are sung together.

Television and it’s Effect on Indian Culture Television has made steady advances and profound impacts on the Indian society where millions are unable to read and write. MTV allows young adults to be informed of different types of music that is accessible to other parts of the world. It also allows them to become more Americanized in the way they speak and dress.

Advantages Television has provided the Indian society to be more informed of different trends, fads, and events that take place in western culture. It positively impacts the Indian culture. Music has shown people that Indian culture is more modern in the way they sing and preform in films. Without music, everyone would be bored and they would not learn about other cultures. Indian music has branched out over the years.

Short Comings Most Indian traditional views have been thrown out the window because of media. In the film Devdas, the characters were very respectable in the way they spoke, they dressed traditionally and they acted kindly to others. Religion was extremely important in the film because it was a main part of the traditional Indian culture.

Short comings However, in Dev D, everything was the complete opposite Religious views were not present, and they characters dressed very modern and they spoke informally.

Influence Media has influenced countless people in India and because of it the country has become extremely westernized. More and more people in Indian have been acting more westernized and they have adapted it as a new way of life. It has many positive and negative effects on the culture but all together it is a good thing. It is a new way for Indians to branch other and feel more attached to the rest of the world.
