Transfer mail & files to a new computer. Copy mail attachments and other files to CD to share with family & friends. An alternative for use an online account or online backup. You get 1GB storage with Mediacom or 7GB with Google Mail.

How To Copy , Attachments and other files to CD or DVD? Backup by organizing your messages, contacts, accounts, attachments & other files in folders & copy them to CD. Archive by moving old messages to separate mail folders & copying those folders to CD. Use a 3 rd party program to backup & restore mail. Use a 3 rd party program to back up your entire hard drive. Migrate from Windows XP to Vista using Windows Easy Transfer (part of Vista)

Outline of DIY Mail Backup Organize messages, contacts, accounts, and attachments in folders in XP or Vista. Copy the folders to CD in XP or Vista. Restore them from CD to hard drive as needed. Archive messages to CD - create archive folders, then as above for messages only. Transfer messages, contacts & accounts from Windows XP to Vista – XP methods to organize & save, special imports to restore.

Vocabulary Contacts or Address Book – In OE, a file and in WM, a folder that contains address information Message folder – In OE, a file and in WM a folder that contains a group of messages CD formats: –Live File System – copy one file at a time to CD, also called packet writing, native on Vista only. –Mastered – copy to staging area on hard drive, which is then copied to CD, on both XP & Vista.

Organize & Attachments for Copying in OE Create a folder for mail under My Documents Change message store: Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, Store Folder button, Change button, navigate to mail folder, OK. Close & reopen OE to move store. Export contacts: Tools, Address Book, File, Export Address Book(.wab) or other(.csv), navigate to mail folder, Save. Export accounts: Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, Export button, navigate to mail folder, Save. Save attachments to other folders under My Documents or My Pictures: right-click, Save As, navigate to folder, Save.

Organize & Attachments for Copying in WM Create folder for mail under user name. Change message store: Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Maintenance button, Store Folder button, Change button, navigate to mail folder, OK. Use Contacts folder, or export to.csv: File, export. Export accounts: Tools, Accounts, select Mail account, Export button, navigate to mail folder, Save. Save attachments to other folders under Documents or Pictures: right-click, Save As, navigate to folder, Save.

Save & Attachments to CD in XP, mastered formatting Go to My Computer, right-click CD drive, click Properties, Recording tab, make sure “Enable recording on this CD drive” is checked. For each folder or group of files to be saved, right-click & select Send To, CD Drive. A task tray icon appears stating”You have files waiting to be written to the CD”. When all files are sent, insert a CD, open My Computer, select the CD drive (D:) and choose File, Write These Files To CD. After copying, right-click CD drive, choose Eject, select “Close…” & click OK.

Save & Attachments to CD in Vista, with Live File formatting (packet writing) Insert CD, & in window that opens, click “Burn files to disc using Windows”. Drag the files you want to copy to the folder window, or click Organize, Copy & Organize, Paste. When done press the eject button. 3 rd Party Programs to Save Files to CD They allow moving one file at a time to CD in Windows XP, without creating a CD image file on the hard drive first. Some software that does this: –Roxio’s DirectCD or Drag-to-Disk –Nero AG’s InCD –Formerly, Sonic DLA

Restore & Attachments Copied from OE, to OE as needed Create mail folder & change message store to that folder, if not already done. Copy message folder files to it. Import contacts: Tools, Address Book, File, Import Address Book(.wab) or other(.csv) Import accounts: Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, Export button, navigate to mail folder, Save. Copy attachments & files from CD to other folders under My Documents or My Pictures.

Restore & Attachments Copied from WM, to WM Create mail folder & change message store to that folder, if not already done. Copy message folder files to it. Copy Contacts folder contents from CD to Contacts folder on hard drive. Import accounts : Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, Import button, navigate to mail folder, Save. Copy attachments & files from CD to other folders under Documents or Pictures.

Transferring Messages & Contacts from XP to Vista Default XP location for files is C:\Documents & Settings\ \Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<id- number\Windows\Outlook Express. Can change store location & save as above. Copy these files via CD etc. to Vista PC’s Documents folder. In Windows Mail, click Import, Messages and follow instructions. To import contacts – In Windows Mail, choose File, Import, Contacts.

3 rd Party Programs to Save & All Associated Files to CD Besides messages, contacts & accounts, they save settings stored in the registry, such as Blocked Sender list, message rules and signatures. Recommended by Smart Computing, 2/09 –Amic Utilities’ Outlook Express Backup Genie 2.0 ($39.95) ( –StaticBackup’s Static Backup ($49.95), or $24.95 for Windows Mail, compresses & encrypts files ( –Free versions from StaticBackup – don’t compress or encrypt, don’t schedule backup or write it to CD for you.

Summary Organize – change message store location, export contacts & accounts, save attachments to folders under My Documents or Documents. Copy folders containing messages, contacts, accounts, attachments & other files to CD. Transfer mail & contacts from OE to Windows Mail using File, Import, … Consider a 3 rd party program for backup.
