5 INTRODUCTION  My Computer window and Windows XP Explorer are the two major ways to work with files and documents in Windows XP  My Pictures window allows you to organize and share picture files, picture files, and view picture files in filmstrip view and as a slideshow.

6 MY COMPUTER WINDOW  My Computer command displays a window that contains all the hardware components on the computer and two folders. disk drives, CD-ROM drives, DVD drives, and network drives Shared Documents and My Documents or all user documents  To view the My Computer window click the Start button and then My Computer.

7 MY COMPUTER WINDOW  Left pane System Tasks Other Places Details area  Right pane Files Stored on This Computer Hard Disk Drives  LOCAL DISK (C:) Devices with Removable Storage  CD Drive (D:)_  Flash Drives (E:) Network Drives ** Views may be different on your computer

8 THE STATUS BAR  Displays at the bottom of the window  Contains information about the documents, folders, and programs in a window  Click View on the menu bar and then point to Status Bar

9 VIEWS AVAILABLE IN MY COMPUTER WINDOW  Click the Views button on the Standard Buttons toolbar and then point to Icons. Title view – uses Large Icons and are in groups Thumbnail view – the image stored in the file displays as its icon up to four images can be displayed on the folder with the title being displayed below each icon and remaining in groups Icons view – uses Medium Icons and the title is displayed below the icons and remain in groups Lists view – uses Small Icons and places the drives and folders icons in a list that is no longer in groups Details view – provides more information about each drive or folder and is displayed in groups based on the file type

10 MY COMPUTER WINDOW  Name button  Type button  Total Size button  Free Space button  Comments button When each of these buttons are clicked information is displayed in that column in either ascending or descending order

11 VIEWING THE CONTENTS OF DRIVES AND FOLDERS  Default option for opening drive and folder windows Open each folder in the same window option  Hidden files – the name of the file does not display when you use My Computer or Windows Explorer and cannot be found using the Search command Tools, Folder Options and click the View Tab

12 VIEWING THE CONTENTS OF A FOLDER Double-click the icon. If the right pane of the WINDOWS window contains a message indicating the contents of the folder are hidden and should not be modified, click the Show the contents of this folder link

13 OPENING A DOCUMENT FROM A WINDOW  Double click the document that you want to open  Documents are opened in the program that created them for example: Windows Picture and Fax Viewer – allows you to view bitmap and other images, enlarge, reduce, rotate, print, copy, delete, and display a slide show of images Bitmap image – Paint document containing a graphics image Paint program – called MSPAINT

14 STANDARD TOOLBAR The standard toolbar in the viewer allows you to perform a variety of operation on an image.

15 LAUNCHING AN APPLICTION PROGRAM FROM A WINDOW  Double the program that you want to open. For example: Notepad  Notepad - is a basic text editor that you can use to create simple documents. The most common use for Notepad is to view or edit text (.txt) files Many users find Notepad a simple tool for creating Web pages.

16 MANAGING OPEN WINDOWS  Cascading windows - are displayed on top of each other in an organized manner allowing you to see the title bar of each open window  Tiling windows – can be tiled horizontally or vertically and allows you to see partial contents of each window  To Cascade or Tile the windows right-click an open area on the taskbar and click the desired view.

17 MAKING A WINDOW THE ACTIVE WINDOW  Four ways to make a window active are: Click the desired window title bar Click the desired window taskbar button Press the ALT+TAB key until the desired window is shown Click anywhere on the desired window

18 UNDO CASCADED WINDOWS AND UNDOING TILING  Right-click an open area on the taskbar and click to Undo Cascade or Undo Tile on the shortcut menu

19 CLOSING WINDOWS  Two ways to close active windows are: Click the Close button for each of the open windows Right-click each taskbar button and click close

20 COPYING, MOVING, AND DELETING FILES IN WINDOWS  Copy and paste method – select the file to copy, right-click and click copy, select the location folder, right-click and click paste  Clipboard – a temporary storage area of the computer for cut and copied files, folders, text and graphics.

21 DELETING FILES IN WINDOWS  Four ways to delete files are : Delete this file task in the Files and Folders Task area in the left pane Delete option in the File menu Right-click, Delete from the Shortcut menu Drag the object to the Recycle Bin

22 WINDOWS XP EXPLORER  View the contents of the computer, including drives, folders, and files, in a hierarchical format  Move, copy and delete files

23 LAUNCHING WINDOWS XP EXPLORER  Click the Start button and then click My Computer. Point to the Folders button on the Standard Buttons toolbar

24 EXPANDING DRIVES AND FOLDERS  Click the plus sign in the small box to the left of the drive or folder DISPLAYING THE CONTENTS OF A FOLDER  Click the folder icon in the Folders pane

25 DISPLAYING THE CONTENTS OF AN EXPANDED DRIVE  Click the icon in the Folders pane LAUNCHING AN APPLICATION PROGRAM FROM EXPLORER  Click the plus sign to the left of the Program Files icon in the Folders pane. Click the desired program icon in the Folders pane. Double-click the program icon in the right pane

26 CLOSING FOLDER EXPANSIONS  Click the minus sign to the left of the desired folder in the Folders pane

27 COPYING FILES IN WINDOWS XP EXPLORER Right-drag the desired icon onto the top of the desired location icon. Point to Copy Here on the shortcut menu

28 DISPLAYING THE CONTENTS OF A FOLDER  Click the desired folder icon in the Folders pane For example: My Pictures

29 RENAMING FILES AND FOLDERS  Right-click the desired icon in the right pane and then point to Rename on the shortcut menu

30 DELETING FILES IN WINDOWS XP EXPLORER  Scroll the Folders pane to display the Recycle Bin icon. Right-drag the desired icon to the Recycle Bin icon in the Folders pane and then point to Move Here on the shortcut menu

31 REMOVING THE STATUS BAR  Click View on the menu bar then click Statue Bar on the View menu CLOSING WINDOWS XP EXPLORER  Click the Close button on the title bar

32 PROPERTIES OF OBJECTS  Properties - describe objects DRIVE PROPERTIES  Right-click the desires drive icon in the right pane of the My Computer window and then point to Properties on the shortcut menu

33 DRIVE PROPERTIES  Tools sheet – allows you to check errors, defragment, or back up the hard drive  Hardware sheet – allows you to view a list of all disk drive, troubleshoot, and display the properties of each disk drive  Sharing sheet – allows you to share the contents of the folder with other users  Gigabyte of RAM – disk space

34 DISPLAYING FOLDER PROPERTIES  Right-click the desires folder icon in the right pane of the My Computer window and then point to Properties on the shortcut menu

35 MY PICTURES WINDOW  Organize and share pictures with others  Stores pictures from digital cameras, scanners, and the hard drive  Tasks associated with the My Pictures folder include view in slide show or filmstrip, share pictures with others, pictures to friends and family, print, publish to the Internet, and order prints from the Internet

36 CREATING A FOLDER IN THE MY PICTURES FOLDER  Click the Start button. Click My Pictures on the Start menu. Click Make a new folder in the File and Folder Tasks area

37 MOVING FILES INTO THE BITMAP IMAGES FOLDER  Click the desired icon, hold down the CTRL key (selects more that one file), and then click the next desired file icons  Right-drag the icon to the new folder icon. Click Move Here on the shortcut menu

38 REFRESHING THE IMAGE ON A FOLDER  Right-click the New Folder icon and click Refresh Thumbnail on the shortcut menu

39 VIEWING IMAGES AS A SLIDE SHOW  Slide Show – displays a black screen and each images displays individually on the screen.  Move the mouse to use the Slide Show Toolbar to start, pause, display the next or previous slide, and close the slide show  Point to View as a slide show in the Picture Tasks area of the Bitmap Images window

40 VIEWING IMAGES IN FILMSTRIP VIEW  Double-click the Images icon. Click View on the menu bar and then point to Filmstrip  Filmstrip view – displays the image above the row of images in the right pane.  Filmstrip toolbar – Go to previous, Go to next, Rotate 90 degrees clockwise, Rotate 90 degrees counter-clockwise

41 CHANGING THE VIEW AND DISPLAYING THE MY PICTURES WINDOW  Click View on the menu bar and then click Thumbnails  Click My Pictures in the Other Places area in the left pane

42 SHARING A FOLDER  Shared Documents folder – allows the sharing of folders with other computer users  Shared Music folder – allows you to share music files  Shared Pictures folder – allows you to share picture files  Right-click the file icon in the right pane of the window. Click to Copy on the shortcut menu. Right-click the desired Shared folder. Click Paste one the shortcut menu

43 REMOVING SHARING FROM A FOLDER  If necessary, select the folder icon in the desired shared folder window  Click Delete this folder in the File and Folder Tasks area  Click the Yes button in the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box  Click the Close button in the Shared Pictures window

44 ING A PICTURE  Electronic mail ( ) – is an important means of exchanging messages and files between business associates, family, and friends  Click the Start button, click My Pictures on the Start menu, and double-click the Image icon in the My Pictures window. Click the desired icon to select it. Click the this file in the File and Folder Tasks area

45 DELETING A FOLDER FROM THE MY PICTURES FOLDER  Click the Start button  Click My Pictures on the Start menu  Click the folder to select it  Click Delete this folder in the File and Folder Tasks area  Click the Yes button in the Confirm Folder Delete dialog box  Click the Close button in the My Pictures window

46 FINDING FILES OR FOLDERS  Search Companion Allows you to search for files and folders, pictures and music files, people, computers on a network, and information on the Internet  Click the Start button on the taskbar. Point to Search on the Start menu

47 RUN COMMAND  Located on the Start menu  Used to launch programs  Useful when you want to launch an application program quickly  Path  Click the Start button on the taskbar and then point to Run

48 LOGGING OFF FROM THE COMPUTER  Click the Start button on the taskbar  Click Log Off on the Start menu  Click the Log Off button in the Log Off Windows dialog box

49 TURNING OFF THE COMPUTER  Click the Turn off computer link on the Welcome screen  Click the Turn Off button in the Turn off computer dialog box
