Peer Consultation Chapter 5

Peer Coaching Reciprocal coaching can enhance relationships of faculty as they work to gain mastery of a model of instruction Interpersonal communication skills must be sensitive to others in order for healthy relationships to be maintained

Role of coach The consultant is to provide feedback to the partner teacher on aspects of teaching chosen by the teacher and support critical reflection in the planning and feedback conferences Peer coaching tends to be more didactic while peer consultation relates more to reflective practice Is there a combination of the two in the middle? See Table 5.1

Relationships Trust levels must develop as the coach/consultant meets with the teacher The amount of sharing that goes on between teacher and coach as well as the risks taken based on interpretations of the data will influence the development of trust

Peer Supervisor When looking to improve instruction without an evaluation component, peer coaching or consultation with a peer supervisor may be an effective way to give feedback to the teacher (Kind of like reciprocal teaching can be beneficial to students because of the 1:1 ratio of “teacher”: performer
