MU Teaching Fellowship Program Dr. Carol Gilles
History Originated from the Cadre Program at the University of Nebraska in 1995 We changed it greatly to meet our needs First year we had 10 Teaching Fellows in 5 schools This year we have 76 Teaching Fellows (elementary, middle and secondary) in 10 school districts. We have over 91% still in education up to 8 years out of program.
What Is Necessary? 1 classroom vacancy (retirement or resignation) + 1 classroom vacancy created by selecting a quality mentor teacher from existing veteran staff = Openings for 2 MU Teaching Fellows
Who Are MU Teaching Fellows? 1st year novice teachers Fully certified Graduates of accredited teacher preparation programs Selected by MU and the school district
Costs Districts pay a fee of $19,060 for each set of 2 teaching fellows Fellows receive $13,601 stipend and their Master’s Degree tuition is paid MU waives tuition not paid by contract
Costs (cont.) District continues to pay mentor teacher salary MU provides program administration, liaison, & on-site instruction through MPER and College faculty and staff
What Is the Role of a Mentor Teacher? Have 2 fellows Paid by the district Released from teaching duties Support 2 TFs (1/3) Clinical Associate with MU (1/3) School/district assignments (1/3)
What Qualities Do Mentors Have? Advanced degree At least 5 years classroom experience Leadership Initiative Strong communication skills Ability to listen empathetically Flexibility Sense of humor Understanding of how to work with adult learners

What Is the Role of a Liaison? Visits 2 times per month Supports Fellows Supports mentors Keeps Principal updated about MU initiatives
