Writing about Foreshadow “The Landlady” By: Roald Dahl

Introduction The “Hook” The Bridge Your Claim (Main Idea)

A good introduction will have… “Hook” Grabs the reader’s attention Ex. quote, question, description, interesting fact, thought, etc. “Bridge” Background information or history about the topic Connects general information to your claim Your Claim Often the last sentence of the paragraph Describes what the essay is about

Example What would happened if we lived in a society without any rules? The Lord of the Flies by William Golding tells the tale of several boys getting stuck on an island. They are just a bunch of kids; there are no adults, no houses, no bathrooms, no easy access to food, and they have to figure everything out on their own. This novel uses symbolism to show that a lack of rules can change people’s behavior.

Body Paragraph Examples Explanations Transitions

A good main paragraph will have… Examples Evidence related to your topic (foreshadowing) Be specific! Cite from the text! Explanations How those examples build suspense and help us understand the ending Transitions Helps your ides flow logically Within paragraph and between intro/conclusion

Example For example, the conch shell symbolizes order, assembly and unity. This item brings order the island, so the boys can have an organized lifestyle and be successful there. “We can use this to call the others, to have a meeting, and they’ll come when they hear us-“(Golding 16). Piggy’s idea was precise; as a result, everyone gathered together when the conch was blown. Furthermore, the conch was believed to be powerful. To show the power the conch held, “Ralph waved the conch” (Golding 35). Because Ralph and the others see the conch as a figure of authority, the boys maintain their focus on the leader Ralph, when he is holding the conch. All in all, the conch shell is significant to everyone on the island, without it there would be a huge loss of organization on the island.

Conclusion The Thesis Statement The “Bridge” The Clincher!

A good conclusion will have… Your Claim Ideas from your claim Summarize briefly, and in a new way “Bridge” Supporting sentences to summarize the main points of your essay “So what?” “Clincher” Closing statement that will leave an impression on the reader Ex. quote, question, challenge, appeal to emotions, etc.

Example Throughout the novel, symbolism is used through the conch shell. At the start, the boys tried to work together, but this didn’t last long despite their efforts of using the conch shell to bring order. The author uses symbolism to express the need for authority to control people’s behavior. Without it, we would never survive.
