Campaign Basics What We Do Work with area workplaces to solicit employees for donations –Pledge Cards, Special Events, Rallies, Leadership Events, etc. Rallies! Rallies! Rallies! –Workplaces holding employee rallies experience campaign growth! How You Help Us Provide first-hand knowledge about the need in Stark County Provide first-hand knowledge about the impact of donor dollars on people’s lives and community conditions Be a compelling voice to tell the story

Typical Campaign Rally Welcomes participants and endorses campaign 2 minutes (CEO/senior executive) Talk about United Way’s work 2 minutes (United Way campaign staff) Agency Speaker / Personal story 5 minutes Make the ask and explain options 2 minutes (campaign coordinator) Conclude the event with a heartfelt thank you & collect 1 minute pledge forms (CEO/company campaign coordinator)

Telling Our Story Timeframe for your talk is usually 5 minutes: Introduction (30 seconds) –Your name, title and agency –Program supported by United Way that you are highlighting (1 sentence)

Telling Our Story One Person at a Time (2 minutes) –Highlight a specific individual success story or community’s problem –Client’s life before receiving service and support –Outcome change in client’s life following service or community -Remember to note: Because of gifts to United Way this service could be provided 8

Speaking Tips Your presentation should only be 5 minutes long Be clear, concise and appropriately enthusiastic Stick to the facts Rehearse so you feel comfortable Relax! You are the expert! Use appropriate facial gestures –Start and end with a smile –Make eye contact as you talk with people around the room Take questions one-on-one AFTER the rally Don’t forget to say thank you!

Do’s and Don’ts Do: Be confident – you are the expert Stand in the center of the room Establish eye contact Relax and breathe Be genuine and positive Know basic details of the audience Don’t: Fiddle with props, pencils, handouts or items in your pockets Use professional jargon Be afraid to pause and take a breath Try to tell them everything about your agency Exceed your time limit Ramble 12
