Current Event & News Report by Brendan Lamb Printed in The New York Times on 11/14/201 “Number of Academic Refugees Grows” by Aisha Labi

Summary of Current Event Article “ Number of Academic Refugees Grows” Who:Academic Scholars, Professors & Doctors A refugee is a person who is displaced from their country in order to escape war What:Fleeing from violence & aggression against Academic Scholars, Professors & Doctors Where: Most of the academic scholars are fleeing from Iraq and Syria and fleeing to Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon for places to continue their teaching and studying.

Summary of Current Event Article “ Number of Academic Refugees Grows” When: This problem has been happening for a very long time, however it is getting more violent and worse due to the wars in Iraq and Syria. There are several non-profit organizations that help relocate Academic Scholars, Professors and Doctors to other universities around the world. For example, Rutgers University in New Jersey, is currently hosting a scholar from Iraqi Why:The main reason why this is happening is the long wars in Syria and Iraq and the new terrorists groups called ISIS. The terrorists like to intimidate many people so bombing a university will intimidate many people. Many non-profit organizations are trying to help the teachers and doctors being displaced by these awful wars

Current Event Article “ Number of Academic Refugees Grows” My opinion I think this war is awful because it has killed many people. It is also destroying universities and the scholars and professors are not able to teach the children. Alternative opinion Hosting scholars & finding new countries for them could be a challenge because it cost lots of money and helping them adjust to a new culture is difficult.
