Paul the Apostle (Acts 9:1-20) Page 777 in Pew Bible Paul was a Believer (Acts 9:1-6 Paul was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 9: 17-18) Paul was a Christian preacher (Acts 9:20) He wrote this letter to the church at Rome Paul was on his third missionary Journey to the Gentiles Rom 1:7; 15:25-26 Paul wrote this letter during his third missionary journey. There are five things that we know about Paul at this point in his life. Acts 9:1-6;17-18 ;20 Page 777-778 Pew Bible   First,  He was saved: born again Christian He understood that Jesus was the Promised Messiah. He knew Jesus was God. He talked with Jesus face to face on the Damascus Road Acts 9:1-6 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. 3 As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5 “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. 6 “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”  Second: He had been baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit  Acts 9: 17-18, 20 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized,20 He began preaching the good news that Jesus Christ was the Son of God Read the text: Rom1-6;14-19; 21-25

Stand for the Reading of our text Romans 7-8 (Pew Bible page 800) 7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? 2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. 3 So then, if she has sexual relations with another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress if she marries another man. 4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. 5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. skip verses 7-12 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing skip verses 20 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing

Paul makes 6 Spiritual Confessions 1.He admits that the rules of the OT Law is the perfect mind and nature of God (v14a) 2. I am a saved sinner (v 14b-17) 3. Apart from God, I have no goodness in me v18 4. Both good and evil are fighting for my alliance, and evil is winning. (v21-23) 5. I am a miserable Hypocrite(v24) 6. Jesus died to deliver me from sin’s power\v25 In this passage: Paul makes Six Confessions Rom 7 (v.14). . 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.   1. (pneumatikos PWS: 3703). He Confesses that The Holy Spirit is the source of the law; The Greek word used is the very same word that is used for the Holy Spirit. The law is spiritual because The rules of the law perfectly reveal both the mind and nature of God. 2.   Confession 2: He is a sinner (v.14b).  : but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15  For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I 3.  Confession 3: He has no good qualities that can satisfy God's law (v.18-19). 18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 4.  Confession 4: he has two natures or two laws or forces within (v.22-23). 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. Does that describe your battle with good and evil. After becoming a Christian I lived that way for a long time, I thought that it was the normal Christian life. 5. Paul was living a hypocritical Christian life. Paul knows he is saved. He knows that God gave him a new nature, he is different now than he used to be. He persecuted Christians now he advocates Christianity. all the things he used to be proud of are like cow dung ( KJV) in comparison with what he is proud of now. His desires are different. Philippians 3: 7 But whatever things were assets to me, these I now consider a loss for the sake of the Messiah. 8 What is more, I continue to consider all these things to be a loss for the sake of what is far more valuable, knowing the Messiah Jesus, my Lord. It is because of him that I have experienced the loss of all those things. Indeed, I consider them rubbish in order to gain the Messiah 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the Law, but one that comes through the faithfulness of the Messiah, the righteousness that comes from God and that depends on faith  Romans 7:21-23 21 So I find this to be a principle: when I want to do what is good, evil is right there with me. 22 For I delight in the Law of God in my inner being, 23 but I see in my body a different principle waging war with the Law in my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin that exists in my body. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is infected by death ? That is the language of a born again Christian. A man who knows that he has a new heart and a new nature, He is a new man, his life has changed, his desires are different, but his carnal nature is at work still fighting to control him.    ; " From our youth we are told that if you set yourself determinedly, you can perform what you will! Paul was as determined as any man can be,  but he could not do it.  Six.: Paul was a hopelessly helplessly miserable man. 24  O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? This is the result of Christian who tries his best to live the Christian life. Does that sound like anyone you know. " From our youth we are told that if you set yourself determinedly, you can perform what you will! Paul was as determined as any man can be,  but he could not do it.

Lessons Learned Through Failure 1. Man must die to his sin nature in order To live through Christ (v 6) 2. The Law is absolute and holy, Failure reveals the depth of our sin (v13-14) 3. Man can not be good enough to live the Christian life (v 18-19) 4. Jesus has delivered us at calvary (v25) Paul learned 4 valuable lessons by his failure.   After conversion a man God gives us the desire, but when we try to please him with our words and ways we fail. God uses our best efforts to teach us something we cannot learn otherwise. 1 Failure is necessary in order to learn that our old nature cannot live the Christian life, any more than we have the ability to save ourselves eternal hell.   2.Failure reveals the depth of our own sinfulness.  Even if you desire to please God with all your heart soul and strength it is impossible. Rom 7:13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! Nevertheless, in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it used what is good to bring about my death, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. There are times when we all feel like we are more deserving of God's grace that someone else. " we might say,   I may do this, but I've never done that!" When we compare a" bad person with a good person", In our minds there is no doubt that one is more desirable than the other. we want to think that God should take this into consideration at the judgment seat. That only fair.  Right.------- Wrong   So when you fail in one area, you can't make it up in another. God is absolutely Perfect and holy, No one ever deserves to be saved.  Until you learn that you will never be saved. Eph 2:8-9  The dear old grandmother needs salvation as much as the serial murder. There is only one way to be saved. ABC Mankind will always have issues with that, but that is the reality If anyone could be saved by any means except Grace Paul had the credentials. Phi 3:4b- If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. Those credentials could not save him. But God chose to save him . Like every other human being he had to be saved by Gods grace alone.   Once we are saved, Our old nature has to die and our new nature has to live.   5 For when we were in the realm of the flesh,[a] the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we

Two things that can solve our hypocrisy Problem Knowing The Word of God (Psalm 119:11) will keep you from sin. Ignorance of the word will keep you in sin. Being filled with The Power of the Holy Spirit (v11-12) Believers are commanded to be filled with the spirit continually.   There are two things that can keep us from Sin   1. The Word of God: God Word has the power to keep us from sin. Psa 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Jesus revealed this truth to us in the account of his Temptation in the desert. The Spirit of God: Rom7: 8:125 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin. Slide 7   2. The Spirit of God:  Romans 8:1 (KJV) 1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.  (8:1) — Deliverance From Condemnation: since Christ has come, a most wonderful thing has happened. The people who believe in Christ are not condemned. 1.  "No condemnation" (ouden katakrima PWS: 2664) means that the believer is not doomed and damned, by the Law any longer, but He is freed from the penalty and condemnation of sin; he is not judged as a sinner, but is delivered from the condemnation of death and hell; he is not judged to be unrighteous, but is counted to be righteous. Very simply stated, God said that the person who is in Christ is safe and secure from condemnation now and forever. He will not be judged as a sinner; he will not face condemnation. 5  For they that are after the flesh do hunger after the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, hunger the things of the Spirit.  6  For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

The Holy Spirit provides the Power Romans 8: 1-17 Those who walk in the Spirit are not condemned. (v1-4) Unbelievers are under condemnation(v6-8) The Holy Spirit Lives in all believers(v11) Believers are not condemned, Jesus paid our sin debt. We have the right to be call the sons of God. We have the righteousness of Christ imputed to us by God( v8:1;14-17)  Romans 8:1 (KJV) 1  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

3 reasons why believers live hypocritical lives 1. They refuse to give up anything they know is a sin. Secret sins: The Holy Spirit is convicting them, but they refuse to repent (Rom 6: 1-23) They grieve the Holy Spirit by harboring anger in their heart They quench the Holy Spirit by living in fear There are only three reasons why a believer continues to live a defeated Christian life.   1. Christians refuse to give up a known sin. You know if you are doing something that God does not approve of. If you refuse to give it up, that grieves the holy Spirit. You cannot use the Holy Spirit, you must allow him to use you.  Is there something in your life that you do in secret, that only God knows about it and you know it is wrong but you refuse to confess it as sin and repent. Christians who continue to practice sin lose Gods hedge of protection in this life. Sin is an abominable thing that God hates, no matter who does it. God may turn you over to Satan just like he did with Job. Then not only you will suffer, but Your family will suffer. That is happening all around us. Christian families are being torn apart because of sin in the house Romans 6:1-(Pew Bible Page 799) What should we say, then? Should we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 Of course not! How can we who died as far as sin is concerned go on living in it? ! 16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thank God that, though you were once slaves of sin, you became obedient from your hearts to that form of teaching with which you were entrusted! 18 And since you have been freed from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in simple terms because of the frailty of your human nature. Just as you once offered the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater disobedience, so now, in the same way, you must offer the parts of your body as slaves to righteousness that leads to sanctification.

They Grieve the Holy Spirit Anger Grieves the Holy Spirit  God has reserved Wrath for him self. Vengeance is Mine Sayth the Lord: It is dangerous to assume role of Judge and Jury and executioner. The word anger is used over and over in the OT, Most every time it is describing God’s Anger Believer continues to live a defeated Christian life. Because:   2. Christians grieve the holy spirit by anger. Anger has no place in the life of a believer. I allowed anger to grow up in me as a child and that anger continued to fester in me until it took very little for it to boil over againts whoever happened to be in my way, Ecclesiastes 7:9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,    for anger resides in the lap of fools. Psalm 37:8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. Pro 30:33 For as churning cream produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.” Col 3:8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. James 1:20  human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.

Do not let the sun go down on your anger Eccles 7:9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,    for anger resides in the lap of fools.  Psalm 37:8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.  Col 3:8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.  James 1:20  human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Ecclesiastes 7:9 Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit,    for anger resides in the lap of fools.

Worry Grieves the Holy Spirit Matt 5: 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life 28 “And why do you worry  31 So do not worry,’32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow Each day has enough trouble of its own. Learn to live one day at the time and allow the Lord to handle all your worries about tomorrow. 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes?? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.  33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Learn to live one day at the time and allow the Lord to handle all your worries about tomorrow.

Fear is the same as Worry 7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7   Fear is another way of describing worry. . To live in fear shows that we do not ttrust God to fulfil his promies to us.   2 Timothy 1:7 Page 842 in Pew Bible 7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  Rom 8: 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord Rom 8: 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord

Commands for the Christians First:  Stop feeding the flesh. .  Decide once and for all you are going to be selective in what you allow into your mind   WE KNOW THAT THE BIBLE IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE, WE ALSO HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT SALVATION IS INSTANTANEOUS, BUT SANTIFICATION IS A PROCESS.   ROMANS 12:1-2 PAGE 803 IN PEW BIBLE Therefore I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercies, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices that are holy and pleasing to God, for this is the reasonable way for you to worship.[a] 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but continuously be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God’s will is—what is proper,[b]pleasing, and perfect. How do we do that? It is simple really. First:  Stop feeding the flesh. . Don't spent so much free time watching TV or surfing the the internet or reading social media. We live in a world that screams at us every day to feed the flesh. Decide once and for all you are going to be selective in what you allow into your mind. Be very selective in the programs you watch on TV. Mute the TV during advertisement. Take a walk but stay away from the fridge. The advertisements alone are enough to wake up the dead carnal nature in you. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Released From the Law, Bound to Christ 7 Do you not know, brothers and sisters—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law has authority over someone only as long as that person lives? Romans 7: 1-6 (Page 800 in Pew Bible)

Romans 7: 14-23 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Life Through the Spirit Romans 8: 1f 8 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[ And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. 9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because o f his Spirit who lives in you.

Romans 8: 12-17 12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. 14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to son ship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i] have been called according to his purpose. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

This world is not our home Rom 8: 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,   39 nor anything above, nor anything below, nor anything else in all creation can separate us from the love of God that is ours in union with the Messiah Jesus, our Lord We have no reason to worry about anything

Worry quenches the Holy Spirit Matthew 6: (v31) Page 685 In Pew Bible Do Not Worry 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear---------7 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes?----—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Slide 11 3. Christians quench the Holy Spirit by worry Slide   Matt 6:25 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Matthew 6: (v31) Page 685 In Pew Bible In the sermon on the mount Jesus command us do not be anxious about tomorrow, Seek first the kingdom of God not the kingdoms of the world. 34  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. 25  Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.
