Learning styles

What is learning style? It is individual’s mode of gaining knowledge, especially a preferred or best method.

Why is this topic important ?  It helps lesson planning.  Identify students needs.  Supports engagement and motivation of the students.

Psychologists have identified seven basic learning styles:  Linguistic  Logical  Visual  Musical  Kinesthetic  Intrapersonal  Interpersonal

Three basic types of learning styles:  Visual- People learn by seeing what they are learning (see/imagine/pictures)  Auditory- People learn well when information is presented through music. (hear/listen/sounds)  Kinesthetic-Movement and physical activities help the people learn. (touch/move/experience)

Test Peers for finding out what learning styles they belong to

students retain: 10% of what they read 20% of what they hear 30% of what they see 50% of what they see and hear 70% of what they say 90% of what they say and do

Activity one: Action mimes  Students stand around the circle  Say sentence in the present continuous tense  The next student mimes and thinks about another sentence  This then passes on the next student to mime and so on.

Sentence Building-Students will build up sentences using cards.

Activity three: Listening to music  Students listen to the music  Correct the words in bold  Listen again and check

Reflection:  Will these activities work in your class ?  How will the students react?  Will you modify it? How?  What suggestions do you have for improving this methods?

Thank you
