Activities within the JFDP in the Field of Library and Archive Sciences Tatyana Zaytseva Khazar University Library Information Center 11 June, 2007

About the JFDP JFDP is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. JFDP provides university instructors with a semester- long opportunity to expand their knowledge and expertise in their academic field by attending classes and working with faculty members at universities in the United States. In the JFDP Program took part sixty-six Fellows representing fifteen countries across Eurasia and Southeast Europe: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Educational and Practical Experience while the JFDP WiderNet project The University of Iowa Widernet Project has come with innovative way to deliver digital information quickly and cheaply to seven of eight people in the world who do have access: it’s called the eGranary Digital Library- the Internet in Box. Within The University of Iowa's School of Library and Information Science the Widernet Project gives students, staff, and faculty an opportunity to help provide digital communication in developing countries through practical service. The WiderNet Project focuses on the improvement of educational technology by helping universities furnish faculty and students with access to computers, digital communication, and the Internet.

Cooperation between the WiderNet Project and Khazar University To promote the eGranary within Khazar University and Use the content of the eGranary to develop course curriculum at home university in the field of Information Competency. Cooperation between the WiderNet Project and Khazar University has started. I signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Widernet Project and Khazar University. Khazar University will provide a copy of the eGranary Digital Library via a hard drive that I have received as a subscriber.

How will eGranary help Khazar University? ● Khazar University is striving to respond more effectively to the educational and development problems facing his community Development the communication and information technology that can enhance students' more understanding of course content Increasing home university’s capacity for understanding, teaching and training on eGranary Digital Library in education Implementation Intranet between main home university library & affiliated library branches

Information Literature Skills Training Course Objectives: After completing this course, students should be able to: Formulate a research strategy to find information about a selected topic. Find materials in the online catalog and obtain them for use. Search library online databases for articles and information. Use search engines and directories to find information on the World Wide Web. Use reference sources: Encyclopedias, Dictionaries and Almanacs, Yearbooks & Handbook. Evaluate information sources for accuracy, authority, objectivity, purpose, currency, and appropriateness. Demonstrate a basic understanding of plagiarism and copyright as applied to the research process.

Professional and Other Activities Conferences: - JFDP a two-week virtual conference March 19-30, 2007 The online conference took place on the JFDP Forum ( offering Fellows over thirteen on-line academic focused and practical training sessions. Topics included: Assessment & Evaluation, Curriculum & Instruction, Distance Learning, Financing of Higher Education, Public-Private Partnerships, Research, Student Services, Barriers to Higher Education Access, and Tenure - 8th Crossing Borders Convocation “The Vulnerabilities of Labor Migrants” April 5-7th, 2007 under the University of Iowa International Programs.
