Daily Agenda 3rd Quarter Sophomore English [Extended] Mr. Alan C. Sanders NOTE: I do my best to update this agenda online twice weekly, but the agenda as daily posted and discussed in class is the final one. The slides are in reverse chronological order.

Monday, February 14 In Class  DGP is only for five-day weeks.  Go over Guidelines for Literary Essays & Essay Grading Rubric  Discussion of Thesis Statements for Essays on The Book of Job.

Thesis Statement Ideas  What does The Book of Job say about justice? Here is where you get to make the topic your own. Is the essay really about justice? Perhaps it’s about suffering, faith, or the conflict between good and evil. Perhaps, it’s about what it means to be a righteous man or to be God. Perhaps, it’s about a God who doesn’t know everything. Perhaps, it’s about an imperfect paradise. You decide.

Why does a righteous man suffer? Again, there’s lots to consider here. Is suffering a condition of life? Is suffering a punishment? Does God know what it means for Job to suffer? What is the source of suffering? You might wonder if what happens to Job is truly suffering.

Why does the central poem end in silence?  Why does the Whirlwind ask questions? Has the Whirlwind heard Job? Are the Whirlwind’s questions meant to put Job in his place? If so, is the Whirlwind consistent with the God of The Legend? How should Job respond? Is there something Job might say, or do? If not, are they real inquiries born of true curiosity? If they are real inquiries, how should Job respond? Again, is there something Job might say, or do?

Does the Epilogue fulfill or contradict the expectations established by the central poem?  Hah! You thought I was going to outline a few ideas here, too. Nope, not a chance. Not even for you. You’re on your own here. But, and this is important, if you have answered the first few issues coherently, you don’t have a choice here.  You may also have noticed that I haven’t given you any help with Job’s debate with his friends. You’re on your own with them, too. Frankly, I just want to throttle them, including Job’s wife, but that’s just me. Upcoming  Tuesday, February 22: Job Essay Due

Thursday, February 10 In Class  DGP and Writing Assignment  Discussion of Linda Pasten’s poem “The Imperfect Paradise” What does Pastan suggest when she says, “God must look to wind for lamentation?” Why must God look for lamentation in the wind?
